Not quite what the Mormons believe, but I guess that covers all those religions who see the trinity as just one being and not separate beings.
True, but I think if you take out the line "to himself" it works for Mormonism. The question of whether god made the law or whether god is just following a eternal law is a little fuzzy in Mormon circles, but I think most would say that god is the one who made the rules and hence it is from his punishment that we need to be saved. In that respect, it's a little too similar to an abusive relationship to be comfortable.
When you get through all the apologetics this is exactly what they are talking about. Strange isn't it? Beyond this you have a fact of Jesus being killed to solve a problem that he did not create. When you read scripture closely mankind did not create the problem either.
In many religious philosophies, God is the one who created "the law" which mankind is supposed to live by, so by that reasoning, he's the one who created the problem in the first place. Without him creating laws that would separate people from their salvation, there would be no need to save them from their loss of salvation.
