I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro from 2011. The processor is 2 GHz Intel Core i7 and the memory is 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. (I don't really know what any of that means, but I'm throwing it out there.) It still works reasonably well so I don't want to replace it, and I quite frankly resent having to replace electronics every few years.

So here's my question: it freezes a lot and doesn't always display images (for example, I can't see the images on this webpage: [msn.com] )

I've called Apple and worked with them for hours trying to speed my computer up. I read that installing RAM would help. However I have to go elsewhere to do it, because Apple doesn't service "vintage" computers, but I was warned that if I took it someplace and asked if additional RAM would help they would say whatever they could to make a sale. SO are there any computer experts here who could give me advice?

I'd imagine that 4GB is plenty of RAM if all you're doing is web browsing. That doesn't really seem like the problem to me. It may be your display drivers that are out of date, although I have no idea how to update them on a Mac. I'm sure if you Google it, it'll probably tell you, though.

It's probably not related to your hardware. You could try updating or reinstalling your browser - not sure how to do that with a Mac. But those specs are plenty for web browsing.
Many older browsers get stuck in modern JavaScript. Also, security settings can be an issue.

I come from a PC background rather than Mac. I always advise that more ram is the most cost effective upgrade you can give a machine. After that I'd assume that a 2011 laptop is likely to have a spinning disk style hard drive. If so then look to see if an upgade to SSD is possible.

However that's about improving performance. Simple lack of performance does not explain freezes and lack of images for basic web browsing. For that I'd suggest the there's an underlying problem that better hardware will only fix if the underlying problem happens to be faulty hardware.

Formatting the hard drive and reloading the Operating system from scratch is a rather drastic move if you don't know for certain that it's a software problem.

I'd suggest that instead you prepare a USB drive and boot from that.
Here's some MAC centric instructions I found for setting up a Ubuntu on a USB stick
Once you're able to boot from a USB stick you can see if you still get the problems. If you do then you're eliminated the software as the cause of your problems and you can move onto running hardware diagnotics.

If not then a fresh install can work wonders - just don't forget to back up your data first.

@altschmerz I did

Go to "About this mac" Click on the "storage" tab then click on the "manage" tab, then the "optimize" tab...that should help.

The older units have less memory than the newer ones...

I just "traded in a Macbook pro (2011) for a Macbook Air....

They give you very little for the trade in....but it's better than trying to sell it yourself.

But you're being more "ecological" by trying to optimize your storage. Easiest way is to go through your old pictures and dump the ones that have become meaningless.

Let us know how you do....and share your comments with the Apple and Mac owners page...

I just off loaded over 3500 pictures from my tablet and it improved everything! Also, I use a free cleaner that clears my cache, my browsing history, etc. I do that about once a week...

I am still using my 2009 Win 7 Laptop and my 2015 Apple Air

@altschmerz

I use the WIN version (free!) for my home and all office computers; the link below is for Mac. I have a Mac for my husband's music studio computer...it is friendly, free and does the hard work I am too lazy to do on my own...

P.S. I own a computer software company and use this on our computers in the company as well...we are pleased with just the free version and updates.

@altschmerz hey...I was thinking about you today...er, your computer, I mean...one of our work computers was sluggish so I had one of the techs check it out...seems like the internal battery is going...she said that if we replace it, it will process faster and get back to normal...can you do a maintenance check on yours to make sure all of the parts are functioning? I am having a new fan installed on my laptop because it seems any hardware trouble also affects how your computer runs...just a random trouble shooting thing I thought of...

@altschmerz lol I am lucky to work with about 30 computer tech/repair people...I must drive them crazy because I am always asking "for friends"...
