Fortuitous accident
This morning I set off for a day in York - about 45 minutes drive and a pleasant place to chill. But a traffic queue appeared on route so I quickly decided to transfer the day to Hull, closer than York, straight down the motorway, old port and fishing city that I have avoided visiting for my 17 years here - and what a mistake that has been.
Ferens art gallery has some amazing stuff - pictures, sound screens, interactive art - 2 hours and barely seen a quarter of the place. I was awestruck by 'The lions at home' a huge canvas with fine brushwork and a subject close to my heart
On to Wilberforce House - a look at the man who ended the UK slave trade - very sobering stuff.Never cease to be amazed by mans inhumanity.
and next door The street life museum - a collection of carriages, trams, bicycles, toys, cars, mostly set up as street scenes, with voice recordings of people going about daily life at that period - fascinating.and such a well put together museum
