It's never been about citizenship. It's about skin color.

BS

@Varn well that is what this is. So how do you think a citizen with the proper paperwork was detained for a fucking month for?

@1of5 ...they should have laid off the fucking.. What percentage is this ‘one example’ compared to the number of detainees? I’d say insignificant.

Do get this - accusations of ‘racist’ toward everyone wanting this issue resolved will not make things better..

Not following links.. I’d learned of ‘two’ detainees who’d been apprehended, both now free. What I’ve not heard is what I witnessed out West (US), ‘Sanctuary Cities’ (often small towns) with Spanish related police forces refusing to assist ICE. There are often 3 families living in a ‘single family’ home. When ICE arrives, everyone begins speaking Spanish. And I’ll assume related family members (there’s usually some, allowing homeownership) with US citizenship simply keep quiet, to remain with their own.

Inside a detention facility, I can easily imagine ‘everyone’ having learned some English, with some claiming US citizenship … yet ‘undocumented.’ Sounds to me like they’re being sorted out. To keep such mixups from happening to begin with, the recent policy of detaining all those crossing our borders until determining their actual status makes serious sense. Issuing them a ‘court date,’ and allowing them to disappear ..to a sanctuary city is obviously not working.

But to be detained after your story and paperwork check out, assuming that any verification effort was ever made? Detention isn't arrest, so the same rules don't apply and it has become a complete power play by ICE & CBP.

@chalupacabre Honestly, and perhaps obviously, I’m on the side of ICE. I’m not looking for legal outs for detainees, but this played out, ‘both’ are now free.

If local law enforcement would cooperate with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement ) to begin with, there’d no doubt be fewer such mixups.. But only two so far? That’s hard to believe ..given the depth of cover illegal immigrants maintain to in order to remain inside this country illegally.

Rather than spend our effort looking for legal loopholes, or discounting another’s experience and observations … how bout we allow this to get cleaned up, help when & where necessary, and establish policies, facilities, and procedures to keep it from happening in the first place?

@chalupacabre "detention isn't arrest"....same cell, cheap cot, flimsy blanket, crappy food, scary other "guests"....explain, please, the difference?

@AnneWimsey If the authorities arrest an individual, charges are involved. No such grounds are necessary for detention. The 'offender' can simply be flagged and detained for anything the screener sees fit - maybe it's an accent, clothing, skin color, or remark. An arrest also has legal protections that aren't available with detention.

@AnneWimsey Obviously, some thought’s been given this problem. It still amazes me how the initial illegal act is ignored … while a minority segment of our nation scrambles to hand over various rights.. What percentage of those seeking ‘asylum’ fail to show up for their hearings? If it’s significant … that’s no doubt why they’re now being detained..

And while you’re here ... what other nation/s ignores those crossing their border without ‘documentation?’ I’d considered moving to a number of other countries, but not one indicated I’d be free to ..sneak in, lay low, take jobs from their citizens, produce an instant citizen ..have it raised on their social welfare system ...and eventually be rewarded with citizenship via an ‘amnesty.’ And these were economically & socially well-off nations, too..

@chalupacabre yes, the legalities are different, but the physical unpleasantness remains the same.

ICE does need to reply and explain just why they had a US born 18 year old in their custody. Are they simply trying to comply with the befuddled Donald Trump to keep their jobs or is this a racial thing?

Read an article a couple weeks ago about a journalist who was detained and one of the suggested reasons was that he wouldn't say what the story he was working on was about. They've become emboldened by the current administration.

@chalupacabre Things like this show how easily we can be sucked in. It reminds me of the one woman who was quoted as saying if America was going to have a dictator she would prefer that it was Trump. People have went crazy! In hearing me talk of Trump one man at my workplace one man said he was going to have to leave the building because he was wanting to do me bodily harm. This is all insanity!
