The recent shootings have awakened the country to possibly taking more action on gun control. We'd like to view that as a positive thing but sadly it won't be. If they ban assault weapons we are still left with pistols which may reduce the body count but increases the element of surprise. Shooters left with pistols can attack far more establishments frequented by crowds. The damage has been done and there's no stopping it. Banning weapons can't and won't stop the main factor behind these crimes. We can change the laws but we can't change the mentality. 22 mass shootings in this country in 2019 alone and the year isn't over yet. There will be many more.

So, we prohibit pistols too? How about knifes? Or screwdrivers? Best - cut off everybody's arms!

Every time we need a voice of reason... viola!

@MarkiusMahamius Is this what you suggest?

I still have a spark of hope that things will someday change.

Maybe it's my background in Psych - that believes people can change.

Maybe it's knowing that so much of this truly teenage angst - being twisted into hateful action - combined at times with a mental health issue - could be changed if caught and turned in another direction.

I sure know I didn't grow up afraid to go to big department stores. I'd like that to change. (Just when I think my PTSD is better this crap happens).

It shatters peoples lives. It makes us all look at other people with suspicion.
It needs to end.

It's a terrible culture we're living in right now.

I live in an environment where someone is subjected to gun violence EVERY day! The lack of respect for human life is running amuck in society and I fear not for myself but for my grandchildren whose children may have to be armed at an early age.

@IAJO163 I am so sorry.
My nephew was at a HS when a mass stabbing occurred - I haven't been quite the same since.
You always worry as a caring adult - but this moves the anxiety to a visceral level.
Constant daily violence would be terrible to endure. I saw a shooting in the streets when I was in college and it still makes my blood run cold to think of society getting any closer to that being normal.
I hope there are solutions before we start arming kids.

I'm all for reducing the body count. History has shown, time and again, that people are going to kill other people so getting the count to zero is a pipe dream. Changing the weapon to reduce the body count is one of the few things we actually can accomplish.

But fuck do we ever suck as a species.

True. Take every weapon away from us and we will still find a way to kill each other. If only we could prevent fear.
