“ Is nothing SACRED? “ The cry goes up usually in desperation.. How do you feel about that word SACRED ( quite close to scared is it not?)

I feel that it is quite scary and designed to keep you away at least at arms length. Not necessary at any physical distance but a technique for saying “ This is special and different just because it has been touched by someone famous in the past ” and “ Do not ask any questions about it because I may not be able to answer any questions about it without consulting my bishop ” . SACRED objects are usually kept away, thus increasing the mystery and INTRIGUE.

So IS anything SACRED?

Similar concepts HOLY and REVERED.

The word "sacred" connotes, or even requires, a god; so, to me, nothing is sacred. This does not mean that I cannot revere (have deep respect for) some thing, or someone, or some place (Gettysburg or Ground Zero, for example). I will revere something held by a distant relative more than something held by someone with no connection to me; or, even some object that has great historical significance, for instance. But, as for something of no historical consequence that was touched by someone famous? To me that means nothing--unless it was touched by Idris Elba...or Bill Nye...or Neil deGrasse Tyson...or...JK 🙂.

I believe that all life is "Sacred". Read Albert Schwietzer's "Reverance for life" I love his outlook on the subject. He lived a very selfless life that may have put even Jesus to shame. The Native American believed that the buffalo was sacred, although sustaining their populations by killing them for food, clothing and so much more. .They said a prayer of Gratitude for the slain animal, and they never killed for sport, only out of necessity. If I desired a religion, WHICH I DON'T, it would be that of indiginous people, who did not add dogma to their teachings.

My post was about objects, areas and perhaps some people who are labelled SACRED perhaps so that we keep away from them. Of course if you put it that way I believe that all Human life is sacred. Native Americans did not want other people to kill buffalo and I quite understand and agree with that

Only songs by Elvis.........I appogize.... a mundane answer.....things are usually sacred to me only. And to expect anyone else to consider them so, I think would be irrational.

Please do not appolgize. You have introduced a concept that I omitted in my formulation of the post - that of personal endowment of the word sacred to a product from a famous person. Yes you want to praise those songs and do not want anyone to mess about with them, say by producing a comic version of one of his songs . We should keep away from doing that.
So the concept of SACRED may be useful after all.
