When India was partitioned into India and Pakistan, by all rights Kashmir should have gone with Pakistan, being a Muslim majority state. Wanting to gain favor with the new nation of India, the British conspired with the nominal Hindu leader of Kashmir to bring Kashmir into India. Not giving a crap then or now what the people of Kashmir want, and of course not allowing them to even hold a referendum.
