4/5 days ago I surmised on the power source of a Russian rocket that exploded in the very north of Russia. [agnostic.com]
Well, guess what? @zesty @JazznBlues @MrBeelzeebubbles ..... The Russians are now beginning to admit it was an experimental nuclear powered rocket. However, the maximum radiation level reached, although 16 times normal, was still not a life threatening level. It also lasted for at most 3 hours, hardly what one associates with nuclear fission, so did it at least partially involve fusion? Who knows?
Donald, of course, has tweeted that the US has the same technology, but more advanced!
Here's the latest on the incident:-

The technology is nothing new, the application is. I believe the last nuclear powered aircraft flew in 1957 and the program was canceled in 1961 [scientificamerican.com]

Interesting. That was a massive budget spend!

Just speculating outside of my area of expertise.
Let's consider the development of the traditional fission reactors. First we built huge, land based reactors and later submarine based ones. Never heard of an airplane or rocket- based one.
We were unable to sustain a fusion reaction exceeding a few milliseconds under the best, laboratory, land based conditions. No weight and size limitations, etc. From a strictly technical, engineering point of view I find it very unlikely that someone would start to work with fusion on a missile or rocket. Just consider, how complicated it is to contain the fusion pallets in a lab! Now, try to do the same under the extreme vibration of a rocket engine.

Good point.

Wee had nuclear powered aircraft in the 60s, they were deemed too dangerous to continue in operation [scientificamerican.com]

Isn't that cute, Donald Trump is claiming he knows something.

We STILL don't know what happened in Russia. The full story is likely to take a long time to come out.

Adolph Twitler has no idea of what our defenses are. I doubt the defense department has made a coloring book about it yet!

I like your colourful explanation.

Donny Dipshit is dangerously stupid, but his supporters are worse.

I don't think Donald has a clue of what technology the US has. People in the know would be afraid to show him.
