Wow. Mormons banning something. That's amazing.

So iced lattes are okay then?

Mormons wear one piece underwear that they believe to be magic. So that invalidates any opinion they have about anything forever.

WTF??? Even worse than the Jeovah's Witnesses??? Is it for real??? I just read the article and it seems extremely ridiculous. I'll have my coffee now...

Is it true they have secret underwear? Asking for a friend.

They have temple garments they wear under their clothhes

My town banned Mormons from going door to door. The little fuckers still show up though.

When I lived in Richmond, VA I had to threaten them with a trespassing arrest to get them to stop knocking on my door. Surprisingly it worked.

When I was a stake missionary, I refused to knock on doors that had up notices saying "no religious callers" I was reprimanded and told that saving people's souls was more important than respecting their wishes.
Mormons are weird.

Years ago when I was in High School, a girl I knew said her brother got them to stop knocking on his door by answering it naked.

Here where I live, it isn't Mormons who knock on doors so much, but Jehovah's Witnesses.

@RussRAB I wouldn't be surprised if that encouraged some of the sex starved missionaries to come knocking more often.

@UpsideDownAgain - well, it was the girl's brother and not the girl, so the appeal would probably by more limited to those in-the-closet sex starved missionaries. 😉

@RussRAB, @UpsideDownAgain "Come on, knock on our door- We've been waiting for you-"

I used to be a canvasser, not of religious nature. But, there is a constitutional issue that maybe why your city isn't pushing the law very much.

For the record, giving money to canvassers isn't worth the bother.

@thexter , Once the law was passed, the Mormons started bringing small children with them so folks wouldn't call the police. Kind of a dirty tactic but then, religion is partly based upon guilting people into doing what you want.

They used to ban Coca-cola products because the coke had caffeine in it. But then they bought a sizable interest in the company and their church elder suddenly had a visit from God telling him was alright to drink coke now.

At least the mormon god shows up occasionally. The poor jews have been on hold waiting for god to get back to them for a long time😉

The truth was a lot simpler, they banned coke because they had owned a large stake in Pepsi since 1977 when Joan Crawford left them all of her shares in the company in her will, her late husband had been Alfred Steele CEO of Pepsi and after his death she had been on the board of directors of Pepsi from 1959 to 1973 and increased her shareholding during that time to a little short of 40%.
Though her step children by Steele contested the will in 1977 the LDS legal department squashed them like bugs. About two years ago they bought in to Coke too and as you say had a revelation, Pepsi has never been banned.

Edit sorry teh "revelation was given in 2012 when Romney was running for Prez.

@LenHazell53

Thanks for the clarification. I believe I'm correct about the elder as I remember the announcement that God had talked to him personally and told him it was alright.

@t1nick Yes it was shortly before Monson died amid claims that a Mormon prophet had not made a prophecy in years, he announced a revelation from God that when the word of wisdom refers to "Hot Drinks" it does actually mean hot drinks and that it was nothing to do with the caffeine content, therefore caffeinated cold drinks are okay, but tea and coffee are not, however other hot drinks are okay too, since they did not exist when the original WOW was written.
Even though they did.

The story I got while a member was that there never was a ban on Coke products but that church president Kimball once said something like 'why would anyone drink Coke when they took all the bad stuff in coffee and put it in Coke?' From there, overzealous members decided that Coke - and Pepsi from my undrstanding - should be included in the ban with coffee and tea. I have no idea what the truth is on this subject. I never cared much for cola drinks. I was raised on root beer and orange and grape sodas.

The original Mormon settlers in Utah tried to ban non-Mormons from settling there. They even massacred an entire wagon train of California-bound immigrants that was passing through. They would have made modern Israeli Zionists envious. Until the US Army sent an expedition to Utah to straighten them out. (They have been fairly well behaved since).

To be fair, the 'Saints' fled to Utah, after bloodthirsty mobs of howling Christians banned them from the Midwest!

If you disregard their polygamy and pedophilia.
I lived near a polygamist community in Montana, and though their not officially recognized by the church they still buy into the whole Joseph Smith/Brigham Young stuff.
There’s some very unsavory things that their children are exposed to.

I grew up just northeast of Lee's Ferry -- founded by John Doyle Lee of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. After my exposure to the Colorado City, Bundyville, Kanab bunch, I have to agree with @Haemish1.

'Unsavory' is one of the milder words I'd use to describe the LDS church.

Oh, God, this takes me back to very confusing times. I can't believe I accepted that bullshit.

I'm with you.

Evidently GOD woke up this weekend and suddenly decided specialty coffee drinks, green tea, and vaping offended him so he gave the word to spread this info among his flock via newsletter so they can all now consider these things to be a sin.

A newsletter? This is how god distributes his commands now -- through newsletter?

HOW does anyone take this shit seriously???

That was one of my first serious problems with the LDS church. In 1978 church president Spencer W. Kimball received a 'revelation' that dark-skinned folks were people too. I wondered why their God took all that time to tell us such a basic bit of information.

They would be funny if so many people didn't follow it seriously.

The problem is that your question applies to far more than just the Mormons. Being such a widespread phenomenon, I would think we may need to look for a more fundamental human flaw.

@RichCC - I heard from someone who was questioning the church at the time that the Mormon church was facing an issue with their tax exempt status over discrimination of black people. Then suddenly, Kimball has a revelation that black people are ok. The Mormon church preserves its tax exempt status (which also means its financial records remain secret) and saves face all in one maneuver.

RussRAB:

I won't argue that the LDS are significantly different than other human religions. I happened to have more personal exposure to them myself growing up was all.

I do find it interesting that as other groups like Scientology start to grow large enough to try to claim enough legitimacy, they try to move out of 'cult' status into 'religion' territory. I think that's what Constantine did with Christianity and Brigham Young did with the Mormons.

I'm afraid humanity had an awful lot of growing up still to do. I'm starting to doubt we'll make it.

Oh no! How will Starbucks ever survive?!?! 😛

Oddly, they are alive and well in the heart of happy valley. Who would have thought?

It's fun watching guilty missionaries freezing cold in the North of england sitting inside of Starbucks and Costa, clutching take out cup with the lid tightly on desperately pretending their Latte or Americano is a hot chocolate.

1

I've always been told they ban anything with caffeine in it. I used to have a Mormon co-worker and when we went on business trips we would go to a steakhouse and he would drink root beer with his steak.

They changed their rules after they acquired a large interest in Pepsi. Mildly caffeinated beverages are now acceptable.

@Holysocks thus the need for explicit list of what is okay and what is not. I think most religions feel more comfortable when they can periodically make new rules.

@Lorajay
Exactly. If Menonites invested in fields in the middle east, opium would be allowed during bread baking.

As if any god would give too shits about what someone eats. I mean really?

2

If the people who claim to follow that cult are willing to let a bunch of old white men
tell them what to do and how to live, they deserve any stupid-ass rule those old
fucks want to lay on them.
They're all a joke.

The LDS was founded by a con man convicted of 'illegal banking'(fraud) in Ohio in 1838 -- convicted in absentia after he fled the state to avoid standing trial.

Joseph Smith was arrested somewhere around 30-40 times (among other things, for treason) between 1826 to when he was murdered by a mob while awaiting trial in jail in 1844.

But if course to the LDS he was a persecuted semi-martyr with direct insights into the supernatural -- even when he was 'Joseph the Glasslooker' in New York peering into a stone to search for hidden treasure. Lol.

@RichCC I am aware.
All religion is a con.
Smith was really good at it.

@KKGator Sorry if it came out like I was trying to lecture -- it wasn't intentional. I look for Alice and very much enjoy reading your comments.

I get a bit compulsive about the LDS. Sorry.🤔
My immediate family was split right down the middle -- 1 parent and 2 sons strongly church, 1 parent and 2 sons strongly anti. I don't know how my parents never split -- a lot of looking the other way I guess. They were both wonderful people.

@RichCC It's all good. There are things that make me "jump", too.

Nah. The independent_co_uk link cites an LDS youth mag article that says their Doctrine Of Covenants prohibits 'hot drinks' which they interpret to include all coffee drinks and what they consider to be 'harmful or habit forming substances'. They said if you're ordering in a coffee shop, you're probably getting coffee.😊

I want to know why cocoa and soup aren't included. Aren't they hot liquids? I guess all Mormons will have to go to gazpacho. Lol.😊
