A centrist candidate would be a losing candidate. Do you agree with that view? [salon.com]

Don't care whoever the nominee gets my and will work to get others to do the same. Democrats listen to reason and change with the will of the people republicans don't

@ToolGuy even even they are a big improvement over now

I do agree. It is synonymous for me with status quo.I voted for Hilary as a vote against Trump. I think the planet, country, and people in our country need changes In campaign contribution laws, a green new deal, Medicare for all ( many keep their jobs because of insurance but don't get raises and contributions get higher negating raises) a way those who are illegal that have lived here have a reasonable way to citezenship. ANTI-RACISM PRESIDENT, and the people who work and create th he wealth in the coutnry, have a say, not the CEOs and big interests pay off the lawmakers in our country.

I'm going to agree with TomMcGiverin.

I completely agree. That's how we got Tramp. I've said it before and I will say it again. In my opinion millennials will turn out in droves to vote for progressive candidates in the primaries, but if they get someone shoved down their throats like Hillary was then most of them will stay at home for the general elections. However I do believe that a really good centrist repub could possibly primary Tramp. Our government hasn't been working for the people in a really long time. People are sick of the big corporations, the military, and wealthy getting the lion's share of our tax money. I don't think you can just turn that spigot off, but we have to gradually slow the mass flow down to a trickle and wean them off the government teat. People are sick of these insignificant, tiny, and unnoticeable changes that are basically of no benefit for the average person. Our government needs massive overhauls.

A centrist candidate might win the general election, but the parties are so polarized that a centrist candidate would never win his or her party's nomination.

Seems an odd conclusion when most voters are centrist themselves.

@ToolGuy Yes. Still seems an odd conclusion.

Example: boring Biden.

It has been shown, the right wing is about 35%. The progressive left side is probably the same amount, though a bit more fragmented. That leaves about 30% centrist. If the democrats would nominate a conservative democrat, they would win, but they probably will select a left progressive. Unless that candidate appeals to the middle, Trump will win reelection.

I disagree. I am not familiar with the French or British politics, but in US prez elections, most people who are swing voters want someone who is exciting to them and that they feel is on their side. Centrists candidates, as Chris Hedges would say, stand for nothing and will fight for nothing. They do not inspire trust or excitement. Thus, the voters will stay home if the Dems nominate a centrist. Last time, Bernie was the one drawing all the crowds and inspiring excitement, not Hillary, because he was inspiring and authenitic, people knew that and responded. If he is nominated, many poor people who normally don't vote would get excited and hopeful enough to turn out for him, as they did for Obama. That is how Bernie wins, by turning out non-voters who will never turn out for a moderate like Biden. And why should they, when he has already famously told the rich and powerful in private that nothing would change....
