Some Catholic churches required a tithe (a percentage of your income.) Sometimes the church required you to give 97% of your income and then asked you to give when the plate was passed around. Some countries require you to be Catholic. If the tithe in that country and church is as high as 97% you starve no matter how wealthy you are. This is/was ridiculous.

A tithe is 10% of income. I don't think a church would ever ask for 97%

Yes, they have. The Vatican, Catholic, bank is also one of the biggest money laundering organizations in history.

@gsiamne Yes, and Italy can't do anything about it because The Vatican is sovereign territory and not subject to Italian law.
