Average teachers salaries are in excess of $40000. I'm not sure if I would want my children taught by someone who cannot survive on on that level of pay.

The effects of a free market economy. For the America way to prevail, the teacher should take her skills elsewhere, then collapsing the market for education, then return once the market has raised the income.
Rewards do not often come through altruistic action. It would appear to be an effect of small government which may have worked in 1788, but as the world has evolved, the attitudes that make America 'American' have fallen behind. A bad job by Joe Macarthy back in the 1950s

Only around 30% of those living in and supporting the current president. But when foreigners begin piling on what the other 70% know to be true ..that smacks of envy…

The rational among us don't insist that. Sadly, these are the circumstances many people live in here, particularly if they're single parents and/or have health problems.
