ESPERANTO: for years I've been intrigued by the notion of artificial languages. Lately I've been thinking of learning Esperanto. Are there any Esperantists on here?

I thought acronyms (which I truly dislike) and emojis were the new artificial language.

Please, not another one.

It's a lot older than emojis, I assure you. And, compared to emojis, it has the distinct advantage that I can work out what the letters mean 🙂

@Senex

I understand it's much older, but hasn't caught on like acronyms, abbreviations and emojis. The reality is, these things have, in some cases, usurped the English language.
Young people are now speaking the language which is available on their phones and at their fingertips.

@Athena Yes and in some cases no doubt emojis really act like a language. Its no good to me though. I often can't tell if a face is meant to be laughing or crying. And as for those other symbols! Is that a beret or a dog turd? I just don't know what they're depicting.

@Senex
I much prefer whole words to acronyms, but I like emojis sometimes to help clarify tone.

@Athena Fair enough if you can interpret them 🙂

I'm a total dunce at languages. However was intrigued by this idea of a universal language when I encountered it in the Stainless Steel Rat books I read as a child. I'd assumed that it was a Spanish dialect until I read up a little more about it - in the back of one of those books.

I don't know those particular books. When I was a kid the State education system (That was in Tasmania) offered Esperanto as a subject - that's where I first heard of it. Unfortunately it wasn't available at the Catholic school I attended.

I have never understood the need for an artificial language.
