A church lured in homeless people then locked them in houses and forced them to panhandle, feds say
[washingtonpost.com]
It's hard to believe that was profitable for the church. You would think that providing food and shelter for these people would have cost around as much and they could get with welfare and panhandling. Perhaps panhandling is more lucrative than I thought.
You'd be surprised how much a panhandler can make. As I recall... 60 minutes did a piece on this years ago. Some panhandlers actually made $50k+ per year... Some almost twice that, depending on location and skillset at begging. They also showed a woman in a wheel chair going home for the night. She would wheel herself around the block and then fold up her chair an put it in her Cadillac.
I am convinced most of the ones I see around here have drug issues. I have asked some if they would like lunch on me... In every case I was turned down in favor of, "I just need the cash!"
I know there are guys in Africa who do this. They house and feed the panhandlers, and this seems to be an accepted practice.
@OldMetalHead this is an accepted practice in Muslim culture, from what I understand, where giving alms is part of their expectations
I've heard there were quasi-moral arrangements associated with panhandlers but I've never had a chance to look into it.
I'm not surprised that they would assume the veneer of religion. Why wouldn't they?
And preying on some of the must vulnerable people in our society is pretty bad. I wonder if they were once or are now homeless themselves. It sounds like an unpleasant, desperate path for everybody involved.
