Why are right-wingers so sold on the idea that "Socialism" is another word for "violent authoritarianism, government oppression, etc. ?"

Like I understand the fear of economic and social tyranny via a monothematic and aggressive overculture, but the claim that Socialism is going to lead to Pol Pot or Stalin: Episode 2 is really just a slippery slope argument made to take advantage of the ignorance and lack of intelligence of right-wing voters.

Unfortunately, in the real world of 7.6 Billion + and over 330 million in the US (with it's 'diversity' ) how are people and systems gong to be run and controlled. We don't live like we did in the distant past where individuals didn't make a big impact on the world. We live in a world of nuclear, biological and other WMD's and there has to to control and a way for a maximum number of people can make a living and be well off enough so that wars don't break out. I have lived in Europe and theirs is a far better system than ours. At least there, there is some attempt to control business practices so that the big fish don't eat the smaller ones. I would take socialism over libertarianism any day.

They are Social Democracies, which is very different from Democratic Socialism. They have a free capitalist market, which is on par with the regulation in the US as made apparent by their similar ranking in the index of economic freedom.

Authoritarian Socialist regimes have committed horrible atrocities throughout their existence specifically because they concentrate all the power in one place, and then claim that the power belongs to the people equally. If anyone thinks socialism is a good idea, they have to have a robust system that prevents power concentration.

We are already well on this road in the US, anyone who has ever equated trump to a nazi ( national socialist ) already knows this. Socialism needs to stay out of the US specifically because it can, will, and has been corrupted by the right.
