Do you believe this chap?
Why there is no way back for religion in the West?
| David Voas | TEDxUniversityofEssex

Can you think of a possible revivalist cause that we have not already heard of?

Hooray! I applaud the decline of religion. It would be nice to see scams based on mythology disappear entirely. 🙂

When the American empire starts to contract, REALLY contract, and lots of people embrace their fear, anger and self-righteousness, religion will probably surge back. it caters to our base weaknesses. In a time of crisis, if they are incapable - as many are - to form social bonds and join communities without magical drivel glorifying yourself, as a center point; that's where people go.
It's easy to be smart when society is stable. I hope people will retain their good sense in the decades ahead... but I doubt it.

There is much wisdom here but I would be expecting a fight back - it goes on all the time. It is particularly worrying when they produce more children as a fight back who will most certainly be very definitely brainwashed. The key is to use observance of the decline, analyse its significance and make sure that even greater pressure gets put on the religions.

His main point was once children have strayed from the religious fold they do not get the 'godly life' example from their parents and this is needed to rebuild religions battalions.

There will always be religion. We are hard wired for superstitious and faith based beliefs. And if you don't think Atheist is a religion then you haven't taken a close look at what they believe.

There will always be religion if we do nothing. No such thing as hard wiring at least in babies. Atheism is a simple one line fact about a person's belief - nothing wrong with that for individual persons but it could never be a religion which requires all it's people to accept immutable conclusions.

Watching this it make me wonder if the current U.S. decline isn't in large part caused by the U.S. hanging onto religion longer than other nations.

I think for religion to make a comeback, there would need to be another period "dark ages" where most peopel wer4e illiterate and uneducated in order for it take really take hold.

Please clarify. What about religion is responsible for the decline in our society.

@Norman347 large numbers of delusional people tend to contribute to decline don't they? Delusions drive people to do things for false reasons. Much of the time at great expense to others.

We no longer live in the age where most things are a mystery. Science has shown there are reasons for most things and has also created things that would have seemed godlike for people just a short time ago. Unless everything crashes this will continue and people who think some mystery being created things will be laughed and seen as extremely ignorant, as hey are.

When he talks about there being no way back for religion, I think "which one"?
If you mean the "classical" religions of today, Christianity and so forth, I believe he is correct, there will be, generation by generation a decline.
That does not address things like scientology, which was created in my life and has millions of adherents, nor consider the formation of some new sect, "transhumanist enlightenment" or some such. An unknown Unknown.
It is also quite possible that people will instead gravitate to politics, or some other form of tribalism. We spent 100,000+ years evolving that trait, its not going anywhere soon.

Scientology: Most people in the UK think they are deranged.

@Mcflewster that's because they are, and the originator, a former sci-fi author, has always been upfront about how he invented it to get rich.....but, "believe"!

@AnneWimsey How can we seal his demise in history?

@Mcflewster if I knew the answer, I could make millions on the talk-show circuit, I bet.....
