"The improver of natural knowledge absolutely refuses to acknowledge authority, as such. For him, skepticism is the highest of duties; blind faith the one unpardonable sin."

I like to think that the mission of this website is " The improvement of Natural Knowledge" . For my part, knowledge can be improved by giving it structure - showing links between and origins of beliefs . Also by improving its reproducablilty through science.

Good quote. I'm a big fan of his grandson's books (Aldous Huxley - [en.wikipedia.org] )

I am a fan of both . . . . it is interesting to see Aldous Huxley's roots too.

Nice quote.

Huxley coined the word agnostic to describe his own belief!

He might have coined the phrase, but it was always there. Ps: How do you know that some ' monk ' ( for example ) in some far-off distant land didn't come up with the expression. BobLoblah calls it anti-edumacation.

@ToolGuy According to the OED encyclopedic dictionary it was "coined" by Huxley, I bow to your superior knowledge, if indeed it is? Quote your source please.

@ToolGuy Well, if you trust "some sources" against the OED..............

@ToolGuy I did ask you to quote your sources, some sources is not a valid reply when I have quoted the dictionary from the oldest English speaking university in the world. Are you a Troll?

@ToolGuy No friend of mine, decent and reliable works of reference are though! Off to a good bookshop with you!

@Austin-Cambridge Don't you love it when someone makes a claim and then tells you to support their claim for them?

Wasn't Huxley the one who redefined the term "agnostic'?

No - he was the one who coined the term.

@Archeus_Lore lol, He redefined the word. An argument from equivocation!

The word agnostic did not exist before him, get it?

@Archeus_Lore Wikipedia 'agnostic theos'. Huxley equivocated the word. It suited his agenda.

Sometimes people are just to way to thick headed . . . . .
