I posted a couple of days ago about my Thanksgiving dinner guest list including my evangelical Christian mother, my pagan step daughter, my lesbian sister, my transgender niece and how we were hoping for a peaceful meal. I said I would report back, so here I am.
Everything went really well. We had a nice visit. My sister brought a girlfriend, and everyone was nice to them. She and my mom can never get along, but they were nice to each other. I think it helped that we had my young grandkids there.

Oh, sure, get my hopes up for a disaster report.

Wow. Not to make light of the situation, but your thanksgiving sounds like a premise to a quirky independent movie. πŸ™‚

I imagine this must be a continual nightmare for your mom, though. I'm curious to know how she copes with all the "sinful" lifestyle "choices".

Great to hear that there were no dramas!

Well I must say I thought my family had a variety!πŸ˜‚ My parents were catholic, I am an Atheist, my sister agnostic. My sisters eldest daughter is a wiccan, her husband is Hindu and I am positive their son was a buddhist monk in a former life.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. We all get along and respect each others opinions.

When my family gets together we always seem to end up squabbling about something or another and none of us is either gay, lesbian or believe in god.

Really? You’re all atheists and you argue?? lol πŸ˜‚ I’m being facetious here!! I guess it goes with thinking for oneself.!

You did your part - well done!

In this post, I didn't include the fact that my wife is Catholic and I'm atheist. In our 12 years of marriage, she's only been to mass twice, but she still claims to believe. I guess that helps us deal with other family with different lifestyles.

my ex was Catholic and she was a hypocrite. Lied to me the entire marriege !

Wish I had a family like that to spend Xmas with!

Wow, your dinner guest list reads like an amazing movie pitch. And this is why I always contend that life is more interesting than fiction – Such varied lives and varying life perspectives all at one table.

It can be done!! So glad things went well. Now for my take away, why is it we seem to always have to kowtow or just be concerned about the Christians among us? Why are we so concerned they will be the ones to erupt? Because usually they do and it frustrated me that this even has to be considered to plan a family meal. Again, I am so glad everyone had a nice visit and there was no drama.
BYW this holds true for the racists and bigots, just when you think your bigoted mother will keep her mouth shut . . . . . . . πŸ™‚.

I'm glad it all went so well. πŸ™‚

Glad it went well! I guess it could have been WW3. You must have girded you’re loins before they all got there! Good job!

Wow! Some of your family must be skilled diplomats..or maybe your mom is mellowing with age?
Maybe she taught you to accept others better than even she knew, if she invites all those people with diverse ideas, even if they are her family.

I didn't do so well a few weeks ago when my racist Trumpite brother visited, spouting bigoted, misogynistic, and racist cliches. I am the wild card one in our family that might confront someone and start trouble, and I did.

I began to angrily counter his contention that poor people deserve what they get, because they're "lazy," but my (more progressive, but diplomatic) sister hastily suggested I go watch Netflix, so I did.

The more exposure the more people accept others who are different.
