Has anyone noticed that this forum, in recent weeks, has started to deteriorate into a Facebook-esque slugfest.
We don’t seem to be engaging in the cerebral discussions where we could disagree with each other and still respect each other’s views, without someone weighing in with either disrespect or rudeness!
Sad days.
Personally, I am half tempted to just run around on all those dead "linky" posts and in-box dumps from so-motivated users and just do the shameless first-post double-point grab.
When life gives you lemons, demand more lemons. Then open a lemonade stand.
I once blocked someone because on top of everything else they did that was banal - they became a double point commenter of the very worst sort. "lol" was the most common one.
Even when laughing wasn't appropriate. It was painful to watch.
@RavenCT - I will take your words as well-founded cautionary advice. I made it to Level 6.3 without being a sneaky cat... I guess I can continue thusly.
There are still a few of us that often get into disagreements and still try to maintain a bit of civility.
That’s the strength of this forum. Disagreement is great. It makes us question our own understanding.
The same parties probably agree on a lot of points as well.
Not descending into this format is what makes a discussion a great one...
That is sad to hear. I’m too knew to realize that. I hope I don’t come across that way. I wish to be Socratic in my approach hoping to learn more.
I’m not on FB so can’t comment on any similarities...but like others have commented already I really dislike what I can only describe as “clickbait” ....a one sentence heading followed by a link. I rarely click to see what the link is, because I think it’s a lazy way to flood the site with posts. That doesn’t actually address your question of course regarding rudeness and disrespect, I have already blocked a couple of people for that reason, actually both were men and relatively young...and I mention that because I don’t think that was irrelevant in my case. Discourtesy seems to be on the increase everywhere it appears, and perhaps the anonymity of this type of forum makes it too easy for those inclined to act this way to do so.
I’m sick of the link & blow posts … one right after another.. There will be a brief, often incendiary comment … then we’re expected, often demanded to “read the piece.” BS. If someone can’t defend their comment or explain the relevant points of their supposed concern, why should we wade through a barnyard before giving our take?
Another thing, for those around here long enough … many see a ‘different board.’ As we’ve either blocked or been blocked by the worst offenders. The few I still tolerate are prettymuch ignored, by everyone.
It makes sad sense that facebook habits would creep in.. But you know what - I look for posts like yours; no links, no memes, no videos - just your thoughts, and a good one ~
Chaos. Panic. Discord...
My work here is done...
No, I hadn't noticed, but I don't spend much time here.
Disagree? Count me in.
I have not noticed the difference but if true it is sad.
Like everything, it runs in cycles. Post something You want to discuss?
