The plight of the Ignorant and Superstitious..

The credit due to the testimony of witnesses depends upon, in part, the coincidence of their testimony with collateral circumstances"
In other words, we can judge the accuracy and reliability of claims that Jesus is God, and claims that Jesus rose from the dead, by comparing similar claims of Divinity and Resurrection found in the Bible

In New Testament times people were very ignorant and superstitious.

In reading through my Bible, I have noted that the people of New Testament times, believed that human beings were Gods, and that human beings could return from the dead.

Let me show you what I discovered..........

Acts 12:21-22 (King James Version)
21And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

Acts 14:11-13 (King James Version)
11And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.
12And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

13Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

Acts 28:3-6 (King James Version)
3And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

4And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

5And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

6Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

See how easy it was for the ignorant and superstitious people of New Testament times to believe that a person was a God on very meager evidence?
It certainly cheapens any claims that the man Jesus was a god.

Matthew 16:13-14 (King James Version)
13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
It amazes me how easily they could believe that Jesus could be a man who died long ago and returned from the dead.

Mark 6:14-16 (King James Version)
14And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

15Others said, That it is Elijah. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

16But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

Even the leader of a country was dumb enough to easily believe that prophets could return from the dead.

My point is that in New Testament times, people were ignorant and superstitious and believed that people were Gods and that people could resurrect from the dead on the basis of very little evidence and lots of faith in the supernatural.

As I was proof reading my post, I realized that people haven't changed much in 2000 years. Even today, some people believe a man is a god, and that people can rise from the dead, on very little evidence.

Oh you meant to start off, "The plight of the Trumpsters and Evangelicals". Lol

Did you see today's news? Perhaps some evangelicals are starting to turn against Trump.

@nicknotes

Only about 100,000 evangelical prescribers to the magazine, and they are the moderates. Doesn't impact his base at all unfortunately. In fact far right Evangelical pastors are circling their wagons around Trump to decry the Op Ed. Trump is thinking of forming a new fund raising super pac known as "Evangelicals for Trump".

I know....I saw the news this afternoon. Oh well....he is still getting away with it. @t1nick

@nicknotes

Appears so unfortunately.

"In reading through my Bible, I have noted that the people of New Testament times, believed that human beings were Gods..." I said, "you are elohim... and fwiw i drive a bus, and to your little child, i am def a "god" 🙂

"and that human beings could return from the dead." just a suggestion, but as we are still talking about ppl dead for over 2k years here at the moment, have they not in a sense "returned from the dead" to us? in the um "spiritual" sense, iow?

"My point is that in New Testament times, people were ignorant and superstitious and believed that people were Gods and that people could resurrect from the dead on the basis of very little evidence and lots of faith in the supernatural."

Today we are just as ignorant. I know people who believe in ghosts and a few claim they have seen them. Not sure if the ghosts were holy or not and the churches still have profits. (No, that is not a misspell.)

Wishful thinking often leads to a miracle.
I witnessed the proclaiming of a miracle.

Several years ago, when I was a Christian, I attended a Bible Study at the home of one of the brothers of my church. It was late afternoon, and we were sitting in a circle in the living room. From my seat, I could see down a hallway from off the living room where there were bedroom doors in this hallway.

As the sun was going down I noticed that the sun was shinning from a bedroom window on to the wall in the hallway. As a truck or large vehicle rode by the house it would block the sun and the shadow would move across the wall of the hallway.

As I was watching a shadow move down the hallway, the woman sitting next to me jumped up and screamed, “”I just saw an Angel in the hallway””
Another woman jumped up “” I saw it also””

Everyone at the Bible Study jumped up and crowded into the hallway searching for the Angel.

By the time everyone was back in their seats, the sun was down, and it would have been useless to try and explain what had happened. They were all convinced that an Angel had visited our Bible Study.

By Sunday Service, it was official, the Pastor announced “”An Angel has visited our Bible Study. Praise God!””

That's how you get a Christian Miracle.

@nicknotes There was a middle aged couple on TV that dealt exclusively with angels. They even reported that angels were 12 feet tall.

You have to remember the bible is the claim, not the evidence.

Since we have been humans we have thought and acted like humans. Many humans believe in the unbelievable this is called faith.

Faith is just belief in things that are not true.

Imagine Wikipedia, but by translators who are all bronze age Christian scholars. Now imagine Wikipedia where all articles are instead translated and written by the King of The United Kingdom circa 1611.

Finally, imagine Wikipedia written by modern scholars, but only by those with an extreme desire to promote scientific rigor to each and every subject.

Do you think these three Wikipedia sets would contain the same information? Which would you prefer be available to the average bronze age citizen?

Here's the thing.
Every single time the bible has been rewritten and/or translated, it has been done
to reflect the agendas of those financing the rewrites or translations.
It also reflects the historical times of those occurrences.
It also reflects the varying levels of ignorance and superstitions of those times.

The New Testament was created by committee(s).
King James was particularly misogynistic.
All references to 'woman as prophet' were changed to 'woman as servant'.
The books of women in the Old Testament were either changed or dropped
entirely.

It's completely pointless to even try to explain the mindsets of those who
were brainwashed by these superstitions.
It's also completely pointless to attempt to delve into the agendas of those
powerful men who were determined to maintain their power.
Power is a tremendous motivator.
Personally, I think that is ALL it's really about.
Power and control over the masses.
