Sciencing with kids... I always made a point of doing home science with my kids regularly. Now I do the same with the grandkids. Each visit we do some sort of science project.

Last week my oldest grandson asked me about the things on the potatoes. I explained they were called eyes and they were root buds to start a new plant. I told him we could start the plant in a cup of water and then plant it this spring. So we did that.

This is the growth after only 5 days. Very small eyes turned into large eyes and root hairs.

Sciencing with your kids is a great and fun way to teach science, logic, critical thinking and reason. Its also a great bonding experience that shares the natural world that's just as amazing as the fantasy world.

Stomp rockets are also fun to do with your grandson! He was amazed that it flew!

Ohhh, rockets! I forgot about these. 🙂

Cool. When they get old enough make a particle detector.

Done this with my classes - and they are amazed to see the tracks from cosmic rays!

You could also cut it up, being sure to leave an "eye" on each piece, and toss all the pieces into a 5-gallon bucket, filled with about 2/3 dirt.
You'll actually wind up with a bit of a crop.
Works with sweet potatoes, too.

Now that the 'spud' is showing signs of growing, plant it in a flower pot and watch as it grows into a potato plant, then the kids can pull it up when it has died off and see that they have grown their own 'spuds.'

I really agree.
I used to do the same with my sisters kids when they were young. She was a single parent, and I helped watch over them when she was at work.
I was never pushy with them, I did what was done for me. And that was to make Science fun.
And like you we got to do all kinds of fun experiments.

Years later, And I still get some 'thank you's' from them.
I'm just happy they got to experience critical thinking.
