Now the world is a global nation thanks to digital technology, would it be advantageous to quit the partisan rhetoric about us and them, whoever they may be,or do we think that the world will resort back to independent territories.

Pan global trading with no borders is inevitable. Do we embrace it or die trying to stop it.

I agree it would be smart to quit the partisan crap. Trouble is Trump is just part of the global populist movement rising in many countries. At a time when we can’t ignore global problems like climate change we just have to get everybody on board. Borders and walls mean nothing. I can foresee where ignoramaces like Trump will just have to be forcefully removed. World panic may not be far away with rising seas inundating coastal cities and lowlands everywhere no longer habitable or farmable. You know those hundreds of millions will push unto high ground. And that’s not even addressing the extreme heat and fires popping up everywhere. Fanatics like Trump in control of such unbelievable military might may end things suddenly too.

Here's the thing..the human species (like our chimpanzee cousins) is a tribal one. Disregard nationality for a minute and think about how many other ''tribes'' we belong to...include religion, politics, sports, schools, etc. Tribes are good for us...they teach us and support us and make us comfortable. We've always had them and we always will.

The real issue is...how to recognize it and disregard it.

Totally agree. The emerging culture is neo-tribalism consisting of subcultures aiming at self-sustenance in many forms, which as you rightly.point out, is our default position.

Probably many years of strife ahead as this neo-tribalism conflicts with globalist ideologies. Can’t imagine the outcome, other than history shows that the most advanced technology wins.

@Geoffrey51 consider what will happen after the planet becomes over-heated, under water and food becomes scarce. Think about the challenges this will bring. We become more tribal under pressure. It won't be pretty, folks. (This from a dedicated optimist.)

@LucyLoohoo Exactly. I feel for my grandchildren who will carry the brunt of this burden.

@Geoffrey51 Georrfrey, you might know I work at Planned Parenthood and do a lot of ''outreach'' events for them. This last week, we were in Glendale, CA, which has a high Armenian population. I was so saddened to see dozens of families passing by, with six or seven children and a pregnant mother! Obviously, it's not just them...think of Muslims, for example, or Mormons, etc. But, instead of considering the future...we're considering how to build our tribes. ARRRRRRGH!

@LucyLoohoo Yes, it is so sad. The world is not a place for children any more

@Geoffrey51 (In the shower just now, I realized I should have added a couple of lines about bonobos. So, here I sit with wet hair & a robe....) Of course, BONOBOS are also our cousins and they rarely have territorial disputes, being (ahem) FEMALE LED!

We retain many instincts, yet most don’t rape at will.. We can learn to curb our behavior. If we remain hostage to it, it may very well be our undoing. It’s a fine line …. But if I can walk it, others can, too ~
