To replace gas taxes, Oregon and Utah ask EVs to pay for road use
Gas taxes pay for the upkeep of our roads, but electric cars don't use gasoline.
Roads have to be paid for some way. This just highlights how usage taxes have to keep up with technology.
Going to have solar put on the house, enough to offset charging an electric vehicle (so no charging station use). I'll still be driving on roads and there should be a way I pay for thier upkeep, but how's my fair share of the bill to be calculated? A flat fee will screw me if I don't drive a lot (fingers crossed, I like driving less and less) but will have me screwing others if I drive quite a bit. Also, vehicle weight is a major factor in road wear - something that the gas tax actually covers (typically the heavier the vehicle the worse gas mileage it gets) - so the little 25 mile range 2000 lb EV should cost less in road taxes than the 6000 lb 500 mile range EV, even though they both would be in the 40+ mpg range in Oregon's vehicle registration fix. Now throw in the Tesla semi...
Anyways, lots of things go into this and some states will do better at it than others.
