WORST BIRTHDAY STORIES

Today I'm 62! 43 years ago I was in Army Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, SC and we did our gas chamber training. If you've ever been gassed, you know the outcome.

What is your worst birthday ever?

I was attending SIU Carbondale during very turbulent times. Students were protesting daily and things were escalating. It was May 6, 1970, and went with a friend to The Rathole, a bar in downtown Carbondale to get my first ever legal drink. We had only been there a few minutes when a whole squad of police burst in. Relaxed was for I for real proof of legal age was in hand. HA! Martial Law had been declared in Jackson County - All bars had to close and a curfew was imposed.

Feeling cheated, my long-haired hippie friend and I proceeded to drive to the next very rural county and settled on Pinkneyville as a likely destination...well, that did not turn out well either.

My worst birthday was turning 70, and I do remember both the tear gas and chlorine gas chambers. Happy Birthday!!!!

Happy birthday! I don't remember any really bad birthdays, thank goodness.

I remember that training. At one point we had to hold on to the shoulder of the person in front of us, remove our masks and walk out of the chamber. Interesting but definitely not fun.
My worst birthday was 2016. My late partner was dying and did so a couple of days later.

I did my basic training at Ft. Jackson, but almost 61 years ago. I remember the gas chamber training well. When you went through, did they still use the infiltration course training, with live machine gun fire overhead?

By the way, it was on my 22nd birthday that I was inducted into the Army.

OK first of all im very impressed you were in the military! You are such a strong woman and I wish you much. My worst birthday was when I was eleven.. My mom and dad were gone.. I was alone.

Oh.. Happy birthday!

I am so sorry for your loss at such a young age. My mom passed on when she was 45 and I was 14. I miss her always, I missed her most when my babies were little. There were so many questions I wanted to ask her. I am thankful to be here to get to know my grandbabies, and my kids as adults. As for being strong, yes because I had to be. When the only option is to be strong you never lose that. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "A woman is like a tea bag, you don't know how strong she is until she gets in hot water."

@HippieChick58 so many questions! Yes! But just to talk to her! Yes, I miss that soo much..

My 25th by far, I decided to climb into my amoir and never come out. I was drunk and being an asshole (acting manly). I so pissed off my sister she threw my Bday Cake at me and Missed! It was my favorite, Rum Cake. I was not a nice man.

@altschmerz it was tragic..a symbol of what my relationship trajectories for the next 26 years..
