I don't wish to play down the threat from the latest Coronavirus epidemic, but I just thought I would like to give it some historical perspective.
The current figure in China for deaths is 722 out of 34,000 people infected.
That means 2.5 deaths for every 100 cases.
Looking up the "Spanish Flu" epidemic of 1918 I found it had a mortality rate ten times higher, at 24 deaths per 100 cases.
Looking up the "Black Death" plague of six centuries ago, it seems that almost half of those who caught it died.
That means 50 deaths per 100 cases.
The results probably reflect better medication and inherently healthier populations, as well as a less deadly virus.

We do not know the truth with the numbers China is dishing out!!!

So panic? DON'T PANIC! We have only had a dozen cases. There are three hundred million in this country.

I agree. We have now around 8 billion people on this planet.
Although this provides a better transportation of the virus, we have also provided security from its spread.
We just need a quicker response from the initial report. That may be the weak link. Humans.

Spanish flu was called that because they weren't in WW1. many soldiers from many places died in the trenches directly or indirectly.

Modern medicine is definitely making a difference In survival rates. The availability and business requirement for International travel makes the spread much harder to control.

I am more than glad I am not on a cruise ship quarantined off the coast of Japan today.

Depends on who's quarantined with you, surely?? 🤣

@Petter Agree but even with the love or passion of one's life, a tiny cabin on a cruise ship could become very uncomfortable.ive heard every time a new case on the ship is identified, the quarantine is extended for 2 more weeks. Food is slipped through a barely open door by a masked server.

@Lorajay Not on a pancake diet, then? That's when you know it's really serious, when all you get to eat are pancakes, slid in under the door.

@Petter You can get bacon through a slot under the door. I know that now...........
And if you step on them, hash browns.

I wish I was quarantined on a ship off the coast of Japan having my food brought to me.
I'm quarantined in a house off the Pacific ocean surrounded by nuts brought to you by the lord and saviour.
