Yes basic levels of empathy, courtesy, and manners go a long way. But how are these qualities taught and reinforced in larger society? Too often in short supply, especially in this modern age of ours.

It used to be called "common courtesy".......

Bullies can't be courteous. Bullies like trump are always confrontational, as long as he's surrounded by his henchmen.

Soo 80% of americans are morons that do not understand "identity politics" and "PC culture" then? Cool. Not surprising. One of the worst public educational systems (elementary and high school) in the developed world.

I’m not sure what you are saying. Apparently the article rubs you the wrong way.

I think people really do understand the PC culture and identity politics and they are troubled that so many follow that illogical and divisive route. Canada is about the same I think.

PC is the contemporary hate-word for what we once called courtesy.

@BitFlipper @AnneWimsey I think it goes a lot deeper than that. Those afflicted with the PC virus see themselves as morally and intellectually superior. They believe that their opinions are the only correct ones—thus the “correctness”.

Especially troubling is when such people shout down guest speakers at public events or drive college professors from their positions. Another tactic is to brand those with whom they disagree as racist, homophobic, etc. They often rush in and try to shut down discussions such as this one.

There’s nothing courteous about such tactics.

@WilliamFleming as soon as I read "afflicted with the PC virus" I knew I was interacting with a troll with an agenda. Anyone who was trying to change my mind would not begin by insulting me. Your goal is clearly not to have a discussion but to be divisive. We don't need that stuff here. We don't need you here.

@WilliamFleming It is not illogical if you understand how one's life and opportunities and experiences are going to be markedly different based on one's identity ie race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. But then you probably know very little, if anything, about systemic discrimination and structural violence, so no point in trying to discuss a complex topic with someone completely uninformed.

@demifeministgal I like the story of a boy who grew up in a garbage dump in Mexico. He had no memory of his parents, and he lived by eating garbage.

The boy seemed totally happy and accepting of his life, and was not in the least burdened with a sense of grievance or victimhood. That was some years ago. By now he has probably moved to a more secure lifestyle, grateful for life, full of joy and reverence.

I think there is some truth to this, but at the same time, I think an equally big reason people voted for Trump was anger and exhaustion with the Dem party for continuing to shove identity politics and PC down their throats instead of offering them a candidate that was on their side economically and who spoke to their justified anger about being left behind in a rigged economy. Seems like the Dem leaders and establishment don't want to address the latter issues or change their approach from neoliberalism. Instead they would rather bash and try to stop Bernie....
