So I've pondered, is there such a thing as evil, or are the behaviours we call evil just different forms of greed: that is, putting our desires, as mundane as they may be, before the welfare of others?

I’ve tried to find a way of saying what I think “Evil” is and it’s basically: there is something you know to be wrong that causes harm to come to others and you still choose to do it. The degree to which you seem to enjoy this may be a way of quantifying how evil your actions are. I don’t know if we can consider sociopaths to be evil since they are incapable of empathy so they may have no understanding of the harm they are doing to others. However once a demonstrable harm is defined for the sociopath perhaps they could then move into the category of what we may consider “evil”. Not sure.

No, it’s a religious construct, evil as an actual entity doesn’t exist ...it shouldn’t be used as a noun. Evil can either be used as an adverb or an adjective, to describe an action or a person or thing.

I agree, but from what does this evil action grow?

@Cyklone selfishness, and a twisted psychopathy in some humans who derive pleasure from inflicting pain and seeing others suffer...sadism, egotism, megalomania...and a whole spectrum of other serious mental conditions.

I'm not sure I would call serial rapists or serial killers greedy. You can try and define out of existence any word you want. For instance is there really any good in the world or is it just different forms of charity?

But serial rapists and killers are trying to satisfy some personal need, even if that is to create pain or subjugation and they do it without regard for the needs if the victim. They don't care.

@Cyklone yes and that's why it's evil

No there is evil just not supernatural , witness Nazis, white supremacist, republicans and the white house and the Koch brothers

But, all of those things stem from greed - not some nebulous "evil".

@AmyTheBruce white supremacist and racist are not always greed

@bobwjr that's an interesting point. I wonder with we could argue that their racism grew out of greed regarding their world view.

@Cyklone most likely from insecurity about themselves and need to feel superior

@bobwjr you're arguing my point here. Their need before the wellbeing of others.

@bobwjr I humbly disagree (I have to be humble because I know that my experience is limited). The racists and white supremacists I have known are indeed motivated by greed. Or, if not greed exactly, then by its close cousin: fear of loss. They fear losing their economic or social advantage.

@AmyTheBruce further in the past( 60's) had less to do with economics that superiority, I remember those times well.

IMO good and evil are human mind judgments having survival value but of no significance from a cosmic perspective.

The welfare of other’s bodily selves might be in our best interest at times. In other situations it might be best to use the others for food.

I lean toward thinking that our true self (singular) transcends all organic bodies.

Perhaps, but we also observe rrpeatedly that adults will instinctively sacrifice themselves for a child and not necessarily their own, so perhaps species survival transcends the self?

@Cyklone yes, I think it does

Great link! Thanks.

Interesting link. I was interested in the concept of evil outside the idea of any god.
