Years ago, Mr. Adams stocked a small pond on his property with bluegills. That pond was one of a chain of ponds which formed an intermittent creek which flowed for miles.
Some months later Mr. Adams went back to the pond to try to catch some of the bluegills. He caught no fish.

I asked Mr. Adams if I could investigate what was happening, and got his permission -- and found the answer.

Tell me what hypotheses you(1) might form about the cause of he issue, (2)how you would investigate each, and (3) what you would investigate first, and why..

They swam away?

...only if I may do it scattershot 🙂

Had a similar situation once, Catfish. So, none? If so, was fertilizer introduced upstream? Accidently killed all ‘my catfish’ after ‘feeding’ pond lilies in a tub. Though their tubs were above the water level, a freak summer (in OR) rain flushed the tablets into the pond, killing every catfish..

Experience 2: Floating heads, with bodies missing… An otter had worked it’s way up stream. I screened off it’s access inlet, and it moved off.. Didn’t get em all, just the biggest. Blue Heron loved them too, but couldn’t get em all 😉

I’d never stocked my pond, the catfish had washed ..or walked down from a neighbors pond above. Didn’t care for them, digging in the muck. Began feeding them (dry cat food), and they stopped mucking up the water so bad. Miss them ~
