Asia and Africa seems to resist Covid-19 better than Western countries so far. So is Covid-19 affecting advanced societies where many 19th century diseases have been eradicated?

Asia and Africa still are recording lower Covid-19 numbers compared to Europe, America and Australia (advanced societies). Why is that?

My Un-scientific Interpretation
The Asian and African societies still are fighting the 19th century diseases that are eradicated in Western societies such as Polio, Small Pox, Chicken Pox, Malaria. I grew up in India and had most childhood diseases growing up but if I visit India today and not drink bottled water, I will get sick in a day. You would too. I grew up drinking from rivers, lakes, plastic, metal buckets and public and household taps. Small restaurant waiters brought you water glasses holding fingers into the water inside.

Could it possibly mean that people in Western society have a weaker immunity. (this makes us target for biological weapons by rogue countries)?

Another Explanation Based on My Experience
The governments in Africa and Asia are lying, dishonest and propagandist who do not report disaster or economic numbers honestly, They fudge numbers all the time, the reporting agencies do not have independence and low numbers from those countries may simply mean the governments are lying.

What do you think?

I live in South Africa but never been aware of a malaria outbreak in South Africa. More middle on the continent of Africa yes!

Population density plays a massive role. Here in the UK, just look how this is hitting London and other major cities, compared with the rest of the country. The London Borough of Westminster has 10 times as many cases as the whole county of Cheshire, with only 2/3 of the population.

You'll probably find that communities in less developed countries are more socially isolated, purely down to the lack of transport infrastructure.

Things like underground transport can't be helping. But anywhere with forced air conditioning shared by people other than your immediate family can't be a good place to be right now.

I don't believe the Chinese stats are true. They cannot be back to normal all of a sudden. ...not after videos that were doing the rounds in January where they were shooting the infected, chucking them in trucks and cremated them. IMO the CCP and the Director General of the WHO are pallies.

Our whole country is on lockdown except for essential services etc but controlled.

In South Africa we have over 1017 infected country-wide. Two deaths as per this morning. We have different medical officials, different officials all day reporting including hospital spokesmrn. I believe in terms of the COVID 19, we are being truthful.

Thank you.

That is low infection and fatality, Isn't it? What do you think of your government response?

@St-Sinner the govt officials and forces are on the ball this time round with this dreaded virus.
Usually they're corrupt with other issues.

Since I've lived, worked, and still suck in Asia at the moment, I would like to share my 2 cent:

A) Facts: Lack of testing, contributed either by the availability of test kits or for political reasons. Indonesia had 0 confirmed for the longest time, not because people weren't sick, but because zero test were administered. As of two weeks ago, the entire Philippines had only 2000+ test kits available for a population of 104 million, tests were only reserved for severe cases. Why does S. Korea have such high number of confirmed cases? Because they were (probably still are) testing up to 20,000 people a day, more people per capita than anywhere else in the world. This is not a blanketing statement saying all Asian countries are under reporting or lack testing. This is simply saying "there are those".

B) Facts: Numerous Asian countries have had to deal with the SARS pandemic in 2002. It was a deadly and painful lesson for a lot of countries, governments, medical professionals, and general public. Everyone has a playbook for another future pandemic, be it physically or metaphorically. Simply put, they knew how to deal with it and they took actions fast. Again, this is not a blanketing statement about all Asian countries, I'm simply saying "there are those". There are plenty of analysis are available on how countries/territories such as Hong Kong, S. Korea, Singapore, Taiwan...etc are dealing with the virus.

C) Facts: Numerous Asian populations have zero issue wearing face masks in public, which may not necessarily prevent a vial infection, but does help reduce the chances of unknowingly transmitting the virus to others. In some countries, physical contacts between people are just not a thing to do, and even considered rude in some cultures. Less physical contacts = more social distancing.

D) Speculation: I have never been to any African countries, nor do I have any knowledge of their practices against this virus. I can only speculate that it is the lack of testing that is contributing to the low number of confirmed cases, but of course I could be wrong.

You could be right, but I speak for my country only which is South Africa. So far most of the infected are in two of our upmarket areas in Johannesburg.
I'll keep you guys posted with our stats and other from time to time.

The virus has spread by travel first, then spreads out wherever it nests. Central Africa gets less travel, thus a slower start, and now most of Africa is closed. I want to see stats on South Africa and where Egypt and Libia, etc tested? Time may tell. The United States now has the most confirmed cases.

Our stats in South Africa currently is 1017 infected country-wide. Two deaths this morning near the Cape Town area. The most infected as explained above are in Johannesburg, and residing in two upmarket areas. We tracked people down who came from Italy, Dubai and from USA.

Flu tends to be more prevalent during seasons with cold weather. It might ease some during warmer weather and come back in the fall.

But don't virus survive better in moist, hot weathers with unhygienic physical and social conditions?

Trump and others are putting out more propaganda. It means that the West is in more of a panic. People in a panic are not good at distancing themselves.

But what about the numbers? Are the low numbers from Asia and Africa not true? Lies by the governments?

@St-Sinner The numbers will be true in most cases unless Fox and Trump's GOP had anything to do with them.

I think COVID-19 is ripping through developed nations because we are more mobile. Simple as that. Look at how quickly it left China and has rippled across the globe and is now blooming in every developed nation on earth. Look at the primary method of combating it...stay home. I realize that will change as a vaccine either has been, or will soon be developed and distributed. But for now, they want to stop the spread by literally preventing physical human interaction.

You explained how fast the virus traveled. But why are Western societies more vulnerable? Is it just the truth in reporting?

@St-Sinner I don't know that I agree western societies are more vulnerable. The answer to that may become more evident after we have dealt with this for a full year and it has "run its course." I think there is insufficient data at this time. Certainly my point seems valid as the virus is traveling more slowly in less developed nations and nobody knows the accuracy of the reported numbers of infections which is necessary to determine the ratio of deaths to infections.
