Interesting article. My curiosity has been raised, and I’d like to know just why such vast amounts of water are needed. I found an article that gives some information:

Circulation of cold water I understand, but why isn’t it a closed system like for an automotive engine? The articles don’t say it, but I assume they are using evaporative cooling, which would waste part of the water into the atmosphere.

I wonder if it would be feasible to circulate the heated water underground for cooling, or just use a large radiator.
