I had a lawyer posting on Facebook about the shutdown infringing on his 'god given' rights. Scary when even the well educated don't realize our rights as US citizens come from the government, not god.

Apparently you haven’t read the Declaration of Independence. The power of government comes from the people. The people are endowed with power at birth. Whether you say by God or by nature makes no difference—we call the shots.

At least that’s what we told King George. Are you implying that we should humbly request to be re-admitted to the U.K. as a colony?

@Bierbasstard There are parts of the Declaration of Independence that sound like trumped up nonsense, but I agree with that part about our inalienable rights.

Think of it this way: If all the people suddenly disappeared there’d be no government. Government could disappear and life would go on.

We are not government property and to suggest that we should give up our basic rights for temporary security is appalling. Sure, we have our lockdown, and out of a spirit of community almost everyone is cooperating, but no way in hell could government enforce a lockdown on an unwilling population.

@Bierbasstard Nowhere have I said that the Declaration of Independence is law. We were talking about where the power of government comes from, and the Declaration of Independence states that well—from the people. Even government at the family and tribal level exists only by permission of those involved.

I KNOW that government sometimes has to order lockdowns and other regulatory functions. Because of community spirit those actions have been made legal. But laws are nothing but a reflection of community mores and opinions. Whenever government oversteps, its edicts get ignored. Look at prohibition. Look at marijuana laws. What about laws against homosexuality—all ignored by the public.

I will ignore your last paragraph as nothing but bile. I don’t even consider myself a Libertarian, though I did vote for Gary Johnson.

The only rights we have are what is allowed by government and/or society. Any and all can be lost.

@PhoebeCat With society being the people collectively. It is up to us to see that our rights are NOT lost.

But the bod in charge thinks he is god.

I bet they know better than to use that argument in court.
As for being educated, I'm guessing you had or have some friends you thought had a brain in their head but they are trump supporters. That should tell you that no one who you think is educated is necessarily educated. My college roommate is an actuary. Technically one of the most book smart people there is. He has no credibility left for me after being a trumper.

Jennifer, many people who do law, including legislators, use code words.
Terms like “god given” mean “If you push me any harder I will use violence”. Jefferson put at least one such term in the Declaration.

In England’s House of Commons, during their centuries of conflict with monarchs, members used with the phrase “Our ancient and undoubted rights” as a warning.

Admittedly though, many in elective offices pander to voters.

Remind me to never hire him as a lawyer.

One persons view of well educated, is another's view of, highly indoctrinated and damaged by brain washing.

He's well educated but not very intelligent. School was easy for him. That is often mistaken for intelligence.
