Where is the world going from here? I wonder if after the pandemic is over will people go to church even more or simply get used to doung other things. How many will realize that god and church made things worse? Could this be a big push to wake people up? I have no delusions that the virus will "cure" religion but what do you think will be the affects on religion in the aftermath if anything?

The effects on religion? Hmmm... I suppose a few will leave, specially the ones that saw relatives and friends succumbing to the pandemic, in spite of their many prayers. Others, the die-hards, won’t change, convinced that their god spared them from the virus. I won’t hold my breath waiting for a massive awakening, though.

On other things, it’s being said that life as we had it won’t come back. Longer term social distancing, more work from home, companies cutting down on business travel (because meetings also work via teleconferencing), etc. What I’d like to see is a strengthening of social services, health care, less waste, better use of resources, the end of obsolescence, redistribution, fair taxation, a fairer society, etc, etc. But I digress... After all, Man is the only animal that trips twice on the same stone.

Its the NWO coming its all planed by the Bilderberg group

The biggest change that will come out this pandemic is an economic reset that will change our daily lives more profoundly that the virus itself, people are going to die but those who don't will be faced with some stressful changes. Some will go to religion to help them cope but I am hopeful that more will turn to reason instead.

This virus will change many things forever but the religious will continue to believe their nonsense and think their invisible god got them through it all. As long as we have those who think the earth is only 6000 years old this will all continue. Once we get away from Evangelicals everyone else that believes will continue to think that bible stories tell us all about life even if they are allegories. The story of Passover is just one of these.

People seemingly find great comfort in lies and lying as the support for our dear leader shows. Three years ago I was filled with optimism about mankind's ability to solve problems but at this point I am in despair that anything will improve.

Don't despair. I know it's difficult not to, but hopefully things will improve....

Well I can tell from a latin american country, d'ont fool yourself, whenever theres tragedy people tend to take cover in religion, a lot do at least.

It is fact that amid crisis people tend to flock toward religion. I kinda wonder if a worldwide pandemic in todays technology age will have slightly different affects. Just musing really.

Seems to depend on who’s left.. Hopefully it takes out more religionists than not -- and that comes from having just watched two videos of ‘them’ doing their things - with total disregard for those they’ll infect as they spread back into their communities…

They’ve always targeted the youth. So there’s our hope. Youth are nearly immune to this, so they’ll live on. What will they witness? Hopefully, as mentioned, death of the ignorant. What will they learn, Science = Survival.

Religion will appear as an unnecessary function, especially as we’ve so many new opportunities to organize for good reasons. The US of A is already being laughed at by the civilized world over ‘our’ ignorant, arrogant, religious followers & leaders. How willing are others to ‘take their place?’ They won’t all die - but it’s becoming more obvious by the day - there’s no god saving anyone...

Wishing anyone harm is appauling, I would be ashamed of myself.

@DavidLaDeau The day I’m handed the button-of-life … I’ll keep you in mind 😉

@DavidLaDeau I don’t see it as wishing anybody harm, more like stating a fact in view of what’s happening. It turns out that the most dimwitted ‘religious’ are still congregating in church and exhibiting other risky behaviour in the middle of a pandemic so, logically, they are bound to get infected and die in larger numbers that the rest of us that are observing quarantine and being cautious. That said, I’m fully aware that the covid-19 is an ‘equal oportunity’ virus and any of us can be affected if exposed to it.

@Hipatia I agree with your sentament but lets change just one word and see what it looks like.

Hopefully it takes out more JEWS than not.
Hopefully it takes out more Honkeys than not.
Hopefully it takes more fags than not,

  • Hopefully it takes out more religionist than not*

Any group or slur you wish is still hate speech.

I was one of those "religionist" many people I love are still delusional on the subject of religion. I do not wish harm or " hope" they die more than anyone else just because they live their lives by mythology.

@DavidLaDeau So, you’re still connected. I’m not, and if any distant relative dies from having attended church in the here & now, they will have deserved it. Add the potential of them introducing it deeper into their communities, even more so. ...didn’t just pick a group out of a hat, only those ignorant enough to be deserving ~

@Varn I am still connected to human beings. When people are ignorant they lack knowlegded and understanding. Theist are delusional and ignorant. It is like a disease. It just as well say,Hopefully it takes out more of the infected than not.

You are appearently intelligent and a good person. I hope whatever hurt that you may have experienced from religion heals. I agree religion does suck and IS creating a huge problem that would not exist without it. Many theist believe they have special privaliges "because god" and thus may endanger EVERYONE! I do try to keep in mind that they by definition while in this mindset are mentally ill and are VICTIMS of religion, and thus are making victims of everyone else.

I kinda liked the quote "didn't just pick a group out of a hat, only those ignorant enough to be deserving". I would just ament the word ignorant with stupid. As the stupid know better, and are thus deserving for the results of their actions.

I am on board with your general thinking (and perhaps feelings) , for me it is always important to always think as a humanist first as if I did not I would have almost no empathy or tolerence for any dumbasses. Truely, best wishes.

@DavidLaDeau Yah, and I’m ‘talkin tuff’ … but if I’d personally known them.. would likely be saddened by their death.

A friend, aware of my ‘atheism,’ just sent me the following link. When I got down to the photo of this belligerent character … it made me angry.. So many of ‘those guys’ (almost always guys) running around my neck of the woods in Virginia.. Don’t think I’ll grieve over him, though ~

I was learning from John Prine (can't believe it took his death for me to discover him) when this came up in the Q. I hadn't heard it, either, so chalk it up to a unexpected spiritual experience I seem to be having. They tend to be unexpected events, as gifts sometimes are, so should not be entirely shocking. What I'm experiencing are realizations which might alter my writings and observations. This video of Ringo's All Star Band felt like my teachers coming together and tapping my shoulder. "Did you need some advice? We've also been through some pain but held on. We have found a way back to joy." They planted the seed that became my attitude but are much more impressive a tree.

I live almost fully in the real world so fiction of any kind holds little nutrition in my mind. I adore the simple humors of my Hippie siblings but don't want their Weight, either. I've found they've got problems, too, and dead weight of human behavior is exhausting. Forgot, in this turbulent era, that I was trying to stop analyzing humans to keep things from coming apart. This was a skill I needed at fourteen but the compensation sucks. Once again I'm entangled within the net of human drama and self-importance like a hapless manatee.

I wanted to experience the peace, the beauty, the childish expressions of joy in music/writing/art, and calm of a desert because those remain real. I can have a relationship with those and it won't end until I do. I wanted to pursue overcoming my outbursts of pain, confusion, with peace of knowing there can be no other Way. It is not destiny but simple progress along an untravelled path with many variations of terrain. To ascribe it with an intelligent design is to remove the delight of discovery and return of self.

The generation barreling forward like the Silver Streak locomotive largely is likely to starve it and tax it into silence (I'm assuming they find answers to survival). Smaller sects will undoubtedly persist but I expect Wicca will be far more popular.

Unless the pope dies or many known evangelucal pastors kick the bucket, nothing will happen.

If the Pope dies!...fugettaboutit! They'll take to the streets and claim its "gods will", and the Curve will start all over again.

@Bman anybody with half a brain would rurn that around by saying, isn't the pope the representative of god on earth and thus infalible, so god will is to kill his envoy? Difficult to explain and even justify.

Today I read that a well known pastor had died from the virus in Richmond, VA. Just a few days earlier he said to his flock (yes, over 100 of them congregated while we are in shutdown) that god was above the virus. I wonder what all those people are thinking now... will their faith be made stronger or will they start doubting the existence of such ruthless higher being? I’m betting for the first.

The religious fundamentalists will always find a way to blame the non believers some way. So don’t get your hopes up.

Actually, it all Satan. Satan. Satan. Satan. Those who are not followers of Jesus are unknowingly possessed with SATAN! Yep been there done that.
