I think those judgments are fair and I find myself making them as well. While I know plenty of people who do not deserve those judgments, it does no good to go on thinking we're really better than that. As a conglomerate, there are enough hate filled, ignorant Trump supporters that it has to influence how you characterize this country. We suck.

Seen from the point of view of the Canadians, it makes a lot of sense to get the word around in the World, that Canada is fair with immigrants and refugees. They get their pick of the most talented, and project themselves as the new 'City on the Hill.' How could that be bad for them ?

This country has invaded over Seventy countries since 1776!!!

If you ever get to travel abroad again tell everyone you're from Canada.

I'm proud to be an American. I like Canadian bacon and maple syrup though.

While I am confident that our republic is stronger than any one administration with senatorial lapdogs, it is nonetheless incredible how much damage one determinedly destructive president can do in the span of (let us hope) a mere 4 years!

@powder

I think the decent began with Reagan.

@RoboGraham

I think the descent began in 1823 when the Monroe Doctrine told European rulers to stay out of our hemisphere.
Or a decade earlier when we invaded Canada.
Or five decades earlier when our land speculators wanted the Appalachian land England wanted the natives to have.

@RoboGraham Completely agree. Reagan started this fucked up GOP experiment when he defunded welfare programmes, Gave the Rich a huge tax cut, spent obscene amounts of money on the Military, invaded Granada and funded the terrorist organisation called the Contras. The obscene income inequality in the US was started by Reagan. I could never understand why so many Americans love Reagan. He was Trump light

@yvilletom

Yes, there are many shameful moments that can pointed to as the beginning of the downward tend.

Maybe it was when the founders wrote the bill of rights granting unprecedented freedoms to citizens but at the same time allowed slavery to continue.

@yvilletom, @powder The Pentagon (from the Secretary of Defense to the JCS), can't take a leak without approval from the President. However, as President Eisenhower identified at the end of his tenure, the so-called "military industrial complex" is a grave concern, as it serves both parties. Just take a good look at defense contracts by state and voting district!

Loss of trust for freedom in the United States. Loss of Faith would be a good thing.

@Allamanda I figured it out when I read the link.

@Allamanda I doubt if that'll make Americans happy though.

@Allamanda You're in US aren't you? Just because you don't like our government, you shouldn't be against the American people.
