Who is your favorite, most influential, atheist/agnostic thinker? What is your favorite quote?
Right now my personal favorite is Robert G. Ingersoll. Favorite quote:
"Why should I allow that same god to tell me how to raise my kids, who had to drown his own?"
Tom Robbins really helped me to be a critical thinker. I have so many favorite quotes. Here's 3
Douglas Adams. I can't think of any good quotes at the moment though.
I love seeing different names come up in here. Thank you. Please feel free to share any key literature or quote when you have time.
@FireBorn I do remember God's final message to mankind: "Sorry for the inconvenience."
Rudyard kipling
The Jungle Book? Great story. Was he an "free thinker"? Any recommendations?
I was an atheist before I knew the meaning of the word. As I had to trounce the religious tendencies of ex in-laws and an ex-wife, Hitchens played an integral role in verbalizing the disgustst I have for religion. While I share a great fascination with Hitch, as he could verbally decimate anyone, I certainly haven't the ability to remember too many of his quotes, but YouTube has an extensive collection of his verbal assaults. My absolute favorite quote though comes from Ricky Gervais ... "'It's a strange myth that atheists have nothing to live for. It's the opposite. We have nothing to die for. We have everything to live for."
That is indeed a great quote. Thanks.
I am a fan of Ingersoll, most of my reading on him has said he was an agnostic. I also like Friedrich Nietzsche, Voltaire, Hitchens and Sam Harris.
Yes, he is/was often referred to as "The Great Agnostic". I wish he was more well known today. So many free thinkers of the past go to their grave in obscurity.
I'm with the people here who don't follow anyone. I've been an atheist since birth, so no one has ever influenced me in this subject. However, I do love Bill Maher, Ricky Gervais, Eddie Izzard, and Sam Harris.
That is an AWESOME quote that I'd never heard before! Do like what I've read by Ingersoll. My favorite is only tangentially related to atheism: "Incredible claims require incredible evidence." -Carl Sagan
Thanks. That is another good one. I just finished Carl Sagan's book The Demon-Haunted World - Science as a Candle in the Dark. Another great mind.
Wasn’t his son nailed to a tree or something?
That is the story. Of course, he was also supposedly resurrected on the 3rd day. As some have said; Jesus had a really crappy weekend for your sins.
I'm not interested in following someone. I have my own thoughts, and not willing to give them up for someone else's thoughts. I've seen a lot of similar stuff on this site. I just don't get it.
True, being a follower is rather contradictory to skepticism. Of course considering others thoughts does not make one their follower nor does it require you to give up your own.
Hitchens by far.
The man had a way of cutting through the BS didn't he?
@FireBorn Yes Sir. If you were to read some of my posts on here you will see that I have the same approach. I like and encourage "straight shooters" on here, at my business and in my personal life. I DETEST ass kissers and their ilk.
