One might consider decisions made on criteria other than taste. So many "food" items have been developed by observing the brains reaction to taste & franken food such as high fructose corn syrup have been developed in laboratories, geared towards addicting the brain to the reaction. Cheaper to lab develop than grow, maintain, ship, distribute, advertise ....etc plantation sugar. Eat real food or die earlier than necessary. The American way.

I was quite taken aback to find out Subway wasn't a healthy food choice. After years of working nights on the road and surviving on McDonald's and chippy meals I decided to get healthy, so switched to working days and visiting Subway every afternoon. A year later after a heart attack I discovered that all isn't as it's marketed! But yeah I still think they taste good.....

Hence the need for ultra strict labelling rules on all commercially sold food. If Subway' had to list the amount of sugar in their rolls, they would probably lose custom unless they offered a roll with less than 2% fat and sugar.

They taste good, though! I know they're awful and the company itself is even worse, but whenever my best friend and I go to see a concert in London our guilty pleasure is a Subway before we drive home. To be absolutely honest, her musical tastes are rather more "poppy" than mine, and sometimes I really only go for the Subway. 😀

Had to laugh as when the EU was formed the Germans forbade the British Bangers from being called sausages because there was too much breading in them. In the 'bad' ole days I loved Bangers.

They are junk

As are most "franchise" foods.

The Irish Government are right to tax them higher. They are unhealthier than other breads and rolls and therefore Subway should either reduce the sugar content or pay the tax. This is a non story as far as I’m concerned. In the U.K. we had a court ruling a few years ago on a similar case...that of whether a Jaffa Cake should be taxed as a cake or a biscuit. The ruling was....its definitely a cake because it goes hard when stale or exposed to the air, whereas a biscuit goes soft under the same conditions. Don’t ask me why biscuits and cakes are taxed differently in the UK...that is an other discussion entirely!

As ever, an excellent comment.

@Petter Thank you kind sir! 😁

My favourite part of the Great Jaffa Cakes Tax Row is that the Inland Revenue, which was arguing that they were chocolate biscuits rather than cakes, hinged their reasoning around the fact that Jaffa Cakes are usually eaten with the fingers rather than with a fork, as they said was normal for cake - which is so very, very British.

My own opinion on the matter is that Jaffa Cakes, whatever they are, taste horrible and should not be eaten at all.

You might say the Irish government had the franchisee by the "sweetbreads"

All white flour is simple carbs which are just as bad for you. No better or worse than sugar. This is just a money grab by the government to remove exemption of bread for value added tax. Those rolls aren't very good compared to NY, Philly or Jersey Italian bread but they're no worse for you. It's all bad.

But with10% sugar to flour mix they are mote cake than bread.

@Petter cake tax

@barjoe 13%

Too much sugar in them, another reason to stay away from Subway.

So that's why I like them.
