That's an interesting subject, books !! Now, I write down tons of comments along the whole book while reading, therefore it's not only customized but a snapshot of who I was at the time. I don't let anyone borrow them unless the are really trustworthy and I am certain it will be returned.

I have a couple of books on Jack Kerouac (letters and biographies) from a very close friend. He will get them back some day, but for now, I am keeping them hostage. I told him this when he loaned them to me. I think I have done this to keep my friend close in mind and in heart. Other books I don't mind returning.

The CVT is a real disconnect from driving and I hear they are unreliable. I’ve always loved the grunt and control with a stick and clutch. I just switched to a car with AWD and paddle shifters. I like it so far. Have you tried a 3 on the tree car?

@Markus Yes. My Dad's '66 Mustang and his '65 Chevy pickup. I wouldn't say I was good at 3 on the tree...it's hard work. I could never get the Chevy quite right, but I drove the Mustang 60 miles roundtrip to work whenever my car was in the shop.

@Markus I agree regarding CVT. I live in the highest mountains east of the Rockies. Often the roads are gravel or have no guardrails. We get real winters and Mount Mitchell is 7,000 feet. Beech Mountain is 5,600 feet and that little town is inhabited year round. My FWD Civic has gotten me through six Blue Ridge winters and I always manage to make it through all but the most serious snow.

I have a 2006 Civic Hybrid with CVT. For all of the highway driving I had to do for so many years, it was wonderful smoothness all the time! Having said that - now I want to get another stick. My first several cars years ago were standard shift... had to go when I started driving so much in stop and go. One day - I will be able to "drive a car, not give it polite suggestions" again. Huh? AWD (all wheel drive) is common, which is quite different that 4WD. RWD is better than FWD, that's why top tier cars are RWD or AWD. FWD cars have torque steer and quite different handling characteristics. It is true that FWD cars are generally better than RWD in the snow as most of the weight is on the front wheels so you get better traction. However FWD cars don't handle as well as RWD cars, as closer to 50/50 weight distribution front to rear makes for more neutral handling and the wheels you are steering with aren't also trying to drive the car.

But when I was younger, I couldn't imagine getting anything without a stick shift and most of the cars I could afford were FWD. Then I could afford better cars and had to deal with Silicon Valley traffic... I'll get a self driving car as soon as they are truly viable.

@shockwaverider All wheel drive is common NOW. Compared to other car transmissions, it's quite recent. I maintain FWD is superior to RWD, based on the number of cars I've seen stuck in mud, snow, and ditches after driving in high mountains and the original moonshine routes of NC for 35 years. To each his own.
