If you want to be an employee, work for a cab company. If you want the freedom of Independent Contractor, work as one for Uber or Lyft, duuuuhhhhhhh. Some people may need one or the other at times in their life.

I think there is MORE at stake than driver/customer convenience :

@FearlessFly Uber and Lyft gave people an opportunity to be self employed, work on their own schedule when they want. If this measure goes down to defeat, I think they will basically do nothing. Status quo might be the best way to go.

@FearlessFly Do these drivers know before they sign up what the contract is? Dothey have the choice to work elsewhere, even perhaps at a completely different job? Free choice!
fBTW, if i had to call a ride, I would prefer a cab company where someone has actually vetted them (especially because they are using a company car!) & is in constant contact with the company-owned vehicle. Otherwise, IMO you are merely getting into a car with a stranger, and we all know what Mom said about that!
Also, re disability: in the years after my stroke i interacted with a lot of cabbies....those that helped with my packages got well-tipped. Those that did not, didn't, and got told why. And if I needed a "station wagon" or whatever the dispatchers were invariably helpful!
