I'm having anxiety about going back to Missouri to visit my southern baptist Uber conservative hell fire and brimstone damnily. I adore my Missouri and the woods and I love my family but they make me on edge

Find a safe harbor in Missouri that you can escape to while you are home. A friend, new or old, some other non-thumper venue.

Do you HAVE to go? I tend to avoid people that make me anxious/mad/upset. It is better for ME,and they can, well, kiss my grits!

If I want to see the family I do enjoy, yea lol

@LadyAlyxandrea Then I guess you gird your loins, and roll with it!

My suggestion (as someone who has never faced this situation and whose advice might therefore be somewhat suspect), is to talk normally about everyday matters but as soon as religion comes up, be completely silent. (Might take some will-power, especially if they ask direct questions.)

Family and going home to uncertainty used to rattle me. I still avoid it.

Now that I'm somewhat seasoned about others beliefs. I let it go. I do get pissed at preachers thinking they got something on me with their holy then thou attitude. I can even lie about believing and not feel uneasy about it. I can lower my head during a prayer and it not bother me. My motto is, ( be and let be ). What's it going to hurt. Where's the honor in starting some crap with uneducated family members. Your the educated one... show them mercy. Live and let live.

That can be nerve racking. My patents are deeply religious. We just don't go there. I still have to endure "we will be praying for you, and God bless you " I hope its not to terrible for you.

Do they give you a hard time about being atheist?

Kinda. Some days it's quiet disapproval some days god has given them a sign that it's their duty to save me

@LadyAlyxandrea you have to lay down the law. My brother who converted to Mormon was the last holdout. His bishop told him that god gave him a message that my brother was going to convert many non believers my brother thought meant he was going to convert me. So I read the Book of Mormon and studied with the missionaries learned everything I could about the Mormons. Then commenced to point out all the flaws and errors pretty much shredding it. He no longer brings it up. They don’t like it when you turn the tables on them.

I don't blame you. Can you set limits with them?

I typically do, but every now and then my aunt or cousin have their passion for converting me revived by a message from God on the radio or when looking at the mountains ?

@LadyAlyxandrea Ugh! Strength! I wish you much strength not to lash out and to be civil. Assuming you want to be!

@RavenCT excuse the language but fuck being civil you can’t be to nice or they will walk all over you.
