Just joined, going to vent.
I have been interviewing caregivers for in home care, and since it's in my home my atheism eventually comes up, and generally triggers believers. Whether they want to or not they begin inadvertently slipping in serenity prayers or appeals to faith, because they are trained to prey on the disabled and infirm, its hard to sell salvation to a happy healthy financially stable adult. Sometimes it's my ouija board table, maybe my atheist books and literature, my shows like modern day debate and mythvision, it inevitably comes up and they feel compelled to at least microevangelize through hints and targeted comments. I was telling my daughter, and she took the side of strangers against her own mother for no other reason than because they are theist and she openly finds my atheism offensive. I finally told her that her obvious anti atheist bigotry is disgusting and that she should be careful not to let her ignorant biases against atheists turn into systemic discrimination against a minority class. That shut her up, finally.
The church looks at atheists as tools of the devil and evil and we are here on earth to do the devils bidding by deceiving believers. I used to believe that and think that atheists were the worst people on earth. Now I think atheists are sane rational people who don’t believe in bullshit.
I had a similar situation with a nurse hired to drive me home and stay 24 hours after an outpatient surgery. She started praying for my health. I said thank you but I'm Atheist. She didn't take the hint. She kept asking Lord Jesus to heal me. I politely told her that she could leave after a 2 hours. I called the agency and reported her. I hired her for nursing, not to push her silly religion on me.
Welcome!!! On that, I don't blame you. It's up to you to set the boundaries for your life and business.
Let them know at the outset your views with regard to religion are very personal and not up for conversion. Ask them if they are capable of respecting your need for avoidance of religious topics. If it goes beyond a simple prayer or positive remark, remind them they had previously agreed to respect your feelings and beliefs.
IWelcome to the site. I'm sorry you're having such a rough time finding someone suitable. I agree that going through an agency and specifying that you want someone that does not try to impose their religious beliefs on you might help you find someone appropriate.
Oh, I never thought about that problem. Of course religious people would try to convert you when your most vulnerable. I told my daughter to make sure I can listen to my favorite Music, when I need her help. She already knows my view on religion. Im sure my daughter and me are gonna fight , when I move in with her, but not about religion.
Welcome! Hope you find a caregiver that goes well with you.
How can you be a non believer and have a Ouija table?
Because I'm a fan of old timey board games
"I finally told her that her obvious anti atheist bigotry is disgusting and that she should be careful not to let her ignorant biases against atheists turn into systemic discrimination against a minority class. That shut her up, finally".
Good for you
Her response to me calling her an anti atheist bigot was sending her hippie boyfriend who is my age over to teach me the "right way" to microdose psychedelics to maximize the capital P "Purpose" they have for me. When I told him that I don't believe fungus has a capital P purposefor me, and that's sure not why I take them, he recoiled like I slapped him and disengaged at warp speed. This is going to be a longer conversation than I thought, it's one thing to debunk organized religion, but general essential oil, herbal remedy, micro dosing, hippie dippy woo magic? This is getting ridiculous.
Welcome to the asylum. Thanks you for sharing all that. Your "she should be careful not to let her ignorant biases against atheists turn into systemic discrimination against a minority class" is key here.
At least your daughter did not go as far as thinking that minority classes should be discriminated against or eliminated.
" I finally told her that her obvious anti atheist bigotry is disgusting and that she should be careful not to let her ignorant biases against atheists turn into systemic discrimination against a minority class." 🥰
I love this sentence and I'm going to steal it for my own use, though not with ref to atheists as we are not a minority in my country. Thank you
I have concerns about a future in assisted living facilities, if I live that long. Hospitals and various care giving institutions are notoriously deaf to requests not to preach their faith at others. Good for you to stand up to that bullshit. At least my children are not religious so I won't have to listen to that from them.
