It's a great question. I used to think of time in absolute terms, as if it didn't require us to define it. And then I read a fascinating book by Alan Burdick, "Why Time Flies," which I highly recommend to this group.

Apparently from a story called โ€œThe Girl in the Golden Atomโ€ by Ray Cummings in the magazine โ€œAll-Story Weeklyโ€ in 1919:
___โ€œTime,โ€ he said, โ€œis what keeps everything from happening at once.โ€

I won't argue with such an august authority.

There is a space-time continuum. Things happen, therefore there must be time for them to happen in.
