It's a great question. I used to think of time in absolute terms, as if it didn't require us to define it. And then I read a fascinating book by Alan Burdick, "Why Time Flies," which I highly recommend to this group.

Apparently from a story called “The Girl in the Golden Atom” by Ray Cummings in the magazine “All-Story Weekly” in 1919:
___“Time,” he said, “is what keeps everything from happening at once.”

I won't argue with such an august authority.

There is a space-time continuum. Things happen, therefore there must be time for them to happen in.
