Does that make you an idiot for posting with your computer or smart phone?

It does if you do it in the presence of friends or at a social gathering or out with someone at a restaurant.

People joke about my phone (it is generally turned off or on the drawers beside my bed as it makes a very good alarm clock) I mainly use it on holidays to text people to meet up or get a taxi to get to where I need to go.

I was out with one friend who the moment she gets her phone out I walk away from the table, the first time she asked why I left (I did come back but I did not explain where I was going as she did not explain why she needed to be on her phone) I said if she was going to be on her phone then there was no point me being there.

Another friend who knows my hatred of the devices especially in movies was at the movies with me and before the movie started he went to the toilet. He left his phone behind. He soon came charging back into the theater I was laughing so hard. I always threatened that if his phone went off in the movies I would throw it, he was also worried that I would answer it and what I would say to the person on the other end.

Friends know that if they let the tech rules their lives I will walk away I will not sit at a table at dinner while the other person/people is/are staring at a device.

One aspect that is often overlooked is that it can also be the modern equivalent of reading a book, magazine, or newspaper in public.

However if you were out at dinner and brought out one of those people would think it rude or weird whereas being on your phone is considered. by some, to be okay.

@Budgie - true, but I've seen people disparaged for reading on public transportation and such as if it's more noble to just be collectively bored. Try engaging so eone in conversation there and you'll likely be considered as invading someone else's personal space.

Well, it is a sign of status. Before, only the ultra wealthy could afford wireless communication and only the most important business people needed to keep in touch with a pager or cellphone.

Me and My Wife have often gone out for a meal in a restaurant, and all we see is couples talking to someone else on their phones, texting, messaging other people. And doing it all night long while ignoring their partners. And their partner is right there in front of them. What the Fuck is wrong with people. My wife says if they have nothing left to talk about to each other they should get a divorce.

To be honest, their partner is mostly on the phone also.

@jlynn37 So they are already divorced in a sense

So what else is new? Welcome to Planet Earth.

Well, many people are already behaving like that. Unfortunately.
