How many people in your life have been what others would call "soul mates"? (Though I don't believe in the term, it's the best I could come up with to describe what I mean.) For me it is 2. My best friend since I was 5, and my wife of 32 years.

Everyone I know in my life is in a relationship that is a car with 2 wheels. Toxic, abusive, cheating, etc. Has it affected my view of wanting a relationship? Of course, but not completely.

I had one, it was magic, last 3 months, she cheated on me 19 years ago, but we still chat a few times a week even though she lives 2 states away.

My mother, brother, and my best friend of 56 yrs. Felt really close about two women. It seems to be easier with people you are not having sex with.

Just one, my best friend. He's like the other half of my coin.

This is my soul mate Poohkie. We had 18 years together as best friends. There will never be a day that I don't miss her and everything about her. She never did a thing wrong in her life and she was always the sweetest and kindest soul I knew. I loved her best and she loved me best. She completed me and made me want to be a better person every day.

Hindsight. Not sure a soul mate exists anymore. I think I projected that onto someone and was later disappointed. The error was on my part. I saw what I wanted them to be in my life, not who they actually were.

FYI. Now I'm singing "I'm a soul man" in my head as I write.

I now think it's unfair to place that much of an expectation on any one person. There are many people who "understand" me, or parts of me. Others who share my varied interests and passions in a way others don't get. I'm talking about friends, colleagues, family, acquaintances, even strangers at events, kids that I teach, my animals,..

I think I would like to be in an intimate loving monogamous relationship someday but I no longer think that person has to be my everything. Am I making sense? Others in my life can be the putty in my cracks so to speak. If my love isn't up for a Tori Amos concert it doesn't make him any less loveable. I have friends who will be thrilled to experience that with me.

It doesn't make it any less perfect. It makes it better.

I think "soul mate" just happens. I agree that placing expectations on people leads to problems. I didn't decide that these people were my soul mates, they just were closer to me, and understood me, better than anyone else. Some people don't feel a need for it, and that's okay.

@tnorman1236 my picker has been broke for years. Not sure I'd know one if I met one. ?

Used to think it was my first husband. Don't think I found one yet.

My ex-wife is one of the ones I mentioned, and I still consider her to be a soul mate, though we are no longer living together.

Exactly one. She's my best friend. Former lover.

I think that depending on what your talking about it changes. I had a best friend of 25+ years and found out that he really wasn't my best freind at all..(my naivety to blame) yet I recently met a woman that I wouln't think twice about saying that she is my soulmate, and she has said as much to me recently. So..I guess 1. Would have been two if my eyes were not opened for me by others..

3

I guess you could say I had two as well. Both exes. So currently I have none. But that's okay, I'm more of a loner anyway.

I used to think that way when I was younger.... That changes with time, being a loner gets tougher by the day....

There were 3 that fit that desciption. However, in hindsight, I was too generous in that characterization. So I'm down to ZERO.

That's too bad.

I am in touch with very few of them but I know I still really love them and everything they ever taught me - I have been with my partner for about 30 years it seems really weird typing that like I never thought of that number before - I think we work well together and don't actually see each other that often as we have our own flats
So at least twice a day I don't have great mobility but see some old friends on facebook don't think I have fallen out with anyone in my heart except for my abusive family.

never had a human fill this role but when i met my pupper i found my missing piece. so thats as close as i can relate, but aside from any romantic aspect a soul mate might fill(because no bestiality for me thanks, lol) she fits the bill

I really do prefer dogs to most people.

@KKGator i have never met an animal who i didnt get along with or at least understand how to handle if it was upset. humanimals are a weird lot. i don't usually understand why they do what they do. myself included on occasion, but i think thats part of what makes people so interesting to me, is that i don't understand them.

I don't believe in "soul mates".

That's where I'm at too.
