I remember this event quite well. I had a print of Tank Man on my wall at work for years. I knew that as soon as the press left Beijing that the people who’d gathered in Tiananmen Square, along with their Goddess of Democracy paper mache statue, would be wiped out.

Sadly, most Chinese students today have been taught from a very early age that the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre was in fact a necessary action taken against troublemakers and rioters, and not a massacre at all. There is a similar party line when it comes to Hong Kong!

i was living in cincinnati, then and now, and i remember the headlines in the local paper were all about pete rose, for 3 months, tiananmen square got 3 days. yeah, i can imagine the brainwashing misinformation 'education' in china about this is appalling. hong kong, is already almost forgotten. yikes
