I lived in Kansas for a year in the Army. The only place I have been that was less interesting and less scenic was N. Dakota. One time going back to Denver through Kansas after a tour, my brother said it was the only place he had ever been where you looked down at the highest point in the state.

Just came with a friend, to do a favor for another friend...checking in, so people don’t think I bailed. There is not much of interest here...and it is flat. It is about 28°F cooler here than home, and that is nice.

Kansas is flat and windy, interspersed with periods of intense wind and electrical charges. And it is full of Republicans on top of that. I lived in Kansas from 1999 to 2004. My house was hit by lightening about 8 weeks after we moved in. That being said, I did enjoy my time in Kansas and hated to move to Omaha. However, since I left things (government, schools, etc) went to pieces and I'm thankful I moved. Not that Nebraska is much better...

One of three U.S. states I have yet to visit. I had 2020 plans to do so, but Pandemic caution led me to postpone. Lot of history out there on the Plains.

I grew up reading the lore of the plains. Authors like Willa Cather and Bess Streeter Aldrich. Willa Cather referred to the area as "nothing but land." It is truly miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. And in some places even more miles!

@HippieChick58 I first discovered the Plains for myself on a solo road trip around 30 years ago, and was immediately awestruck and captivated. They reminded me of the ocean, on which I have occasionally made a living. Perhaps they also evoked some fanciful “genetic memory” of the steppes of Central Asia, on which my ancestors had lived for millennia.

As far as history, my gosh! Comancheria, “Bleeding Kansas,” John Brown and Border Ruffians, Dodge City with it’s history of cowboys, cattle barons and railroads ... and that little dog, Toto, too!

@The-Krzyz I grew up in Nebraska, I saw Wizard of Oz every year throughout my childhood. We used to stand in the yard and watch tornado activity, only going inside if the rain got crazy. I have lived all over, including Kansas, and now I'm back in Nebraska. Kansas history is more tumultuous than Nebraska's, I don't know it as well but I know a bit of it. Bleeding Kansas and John Brown and all the civil war unrest. I fear for the future for Kansas and Nebraska. Our plains are so dependent upon the Ogallala aquifer which is under attack from potential oil spills due to the pipelines, but also just over use.

I think you’d be better off reading ABOUT Kansas, than going there.
