I fail to see the point of ranking by mere magnitude, especially if both good and bad, long and short term, are included in the same list.

If I go to a quarry to buy some stone, I ask which pile has the best stones for wall building, which for making concrete or which pile is best for surfacing a road. I do not ask which is the biggest pile, and then say. I will have some of that.

Yes, this is a list for the magnitude. There will be other lists of good and bad categories. This is not done to be fair or just. I did the list based on the size of the good or bad. Also the assessments of the good and bad can vary. The West may view Mao who caused killing of thousands as a bas character while China still considers him as a great hero.

How much did Mao influence the world?

twill Level 7 July 4, 2021

@powder What about the rest of the world ?

Korea, Vietnam wars happened because of what Mao started.. communism. Thousands of Americans were killed. People in the region still are suffering including in China.

@St-Sinner Vietnam War wasn't a pushback against colonialism and the corruption that followed? (France) Or a simply a desire to unite the north and the south?

@twill

I know the China helped both countries fight back Western powers their strong presence in the East.

@St-Sinner Right... North Vietnam became a surrogate of China, as South Vietnam was our surrogate to promote the Domino Theory.....or at least the supposed genius of the people that created and promoted the Domino Theory.
HEY! It was a great idea...(so is spaghetti for supper) .....let's go kill 3,000,000 people for it !

Why would Ataturk be #1 over Hitler. Hitler started a war that’s effects still ripple today. Imagine what world would look like today if millions of men killed were still alive

Isn't Lincoln 19th Century?

As @Druvius says below he needs to come off.

Not sure Hirohito belongs on the list. And Lincoln wasn't a 20th century leader. And where is Ho Chi Minh? Still, neat list, food for thought.

You are right. Thank you.

I will look at at Ho Chi Minh. What about Pol Pot? His atrocities changed people, landscape and generations after him.

@St-Sinner Yeah, not sure Pol Pot changed the world much though, just Cambodia. Still, he's a contender.

Don't you think what imperial ambitions of Japan under Hirohito did to China, Korea, Pearl Harbor and the atomic bomb changed the world for the rest of the century? That caused a huge human number of human lives.

@St-Sinner I think Hirohito was an opportunistic bystander/supporter, I see no evidence he actually drove events. He could have been replaced by any random Japanese person, and history would be little different.

@Druvius
Who ordered the Imperial Army? Was there a Democratic Government? He was the supreme power, wasn't he? Hirohito presided over the invasion of China, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and eventually, the Japanese surrender to the Allies. That was a lot of impact, right?

@St-Sinner Presided over yes, he wasn't a powerless figurehead as many believe. Was he the instigator or creator of Japan's attempt to build a colonial empire? I don't think so, certainly not in the way that figures like Stalin or Mussolini were. It's debatable.

@Druvius

Right, I looked up. It is debatable at best. Some argue that none of the aggressions, occupations would have happened without his permission. I wanted to put him in because as the figure head, he owned the responsibility just like in a democracy a political party often makes agendas, forces a leader to take actions but the history gives credit or blame to the leader.

A pretty good summary of the main leaders in the world, despite being good or bad. I would change the order of some but it's only my opinion.

Please do, I would love to hear your opinion. The list can get better.
