The amazing story of Wojtek the orphaned bear.
Polish II Corps encountered a boy in the Iranian town of Hamadan who had found an orphaned bear cub. Deciding to adopt him, the group named the cub Wojtek (meaning "joyous soldier" ) and made him an official member of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company.
Wojtek soon became a loyal and beloved comrade, and when the soldiers needed to board a trip to Naples the following year, they found a sneaky way to bring him along. They made Wojtek a private of the Polish II Corps, and gave him a rank, service number, and book to legitimate his status — and went on to carry crates of ammo and earn a promotion as his unit fought in Italy.

I can’t open the link…sorry. Can’t say I remember Wojtek, was he at Edinburgh Zoo? It’s possible I just don’t remember.
@Ryo1 Thanks…I did know that Edinburgh had a Royal charter and that it was world famous for its Penguin breeding programme. I haven’t visited the zoo since my own children were young and we were in Edinburgh visiting the grandparents, but I visited it many times as a child in Edinburgh where I was born and lived until my marriage,
@Marionville I had a holiday in Edinburgh about three years ago. A very beautiful and very cultural city.
@Ryo1 Yes…it was a wonderful place to live and grow up in…full of history too.
@Marionville did you go & see Wojtek in the Edinburgh zoo?
Sorry…I replied above instead of here!
