Anyone a member of a Humanist Society? After seeing a few posts dealing with Universal Unitarian Churches ( a place an atheist may be accepted, or not), I just poked around for 5 seconds on google and found there is a very active and very nearby Humanist Society, the Humanist Society members apparently are openly atheist and agnostic, the UU churches are perhaps not openly atheistic or agnostic however they may be accepting of such. OK, I just said the same thing 2X's in slightly different wording like an infomercial.
I am going to go see what is happening at the local Humanist Society tomorrow, they even have something going on today but I can't make it. It looks like they do volunteer work for food banks and probably other things, also they have social meetups. Ok, I'm putting this under the "Religion & Spirituality" heading although that might not be a totally great description of a Humanist Society

Did some neat supply drives, community gardening, food bank, speakers, conferences, etc. Did you go to the meeting?

Yes and I learnt alot at their seminars but found they had too many meetings and not enough action

I don't belong to any humanist organization.
Interesting, I may need to look further into humanist organizations near me.

I was ordained by the UU church so I can perform weddings (long story)
Their chat boards are all over the place. Possibly worse than facebook.

Years ago, I was ordained as a lark. Did it under a fake name, so not really good for anything.
I am a licensed notary for the state of New Mexico (something else I did on a lark, but at least under my actual name, and legal). My boss (at the time) found out I was going for my notary license, and paid for everything so we would have a notary on-site.
We hosted a lot of weddings, and even had a "Vegas Wedding Package". My boss was ordained. I saw someone on a notary message board ask about performing weddings, and the response was get ordained by the UU church, and then you can charge for weddings. So, I did.
I've performed two weddings so far. At the first wedding, I had people asking where I preached, and they were interested in coming to my "church"
Yeah, I found that immensely amusing.
I used to belong to the HS and did booths for them at various events. Overall, good people. I just got too busy with life to dedicate even a tiny sliver of time to them. C'est la vie.

I like to think of atheism as my belief about religion and humanism as my belief about how to conduct my life.
