Mass democracy is the evolved science of population​ control for the narrow short term self interest of the elites that created it while using it . "Meaningful literacy?" I know you can't mean functional literacy, because you KNOW that's been a hirved, right? So I'm guessing you mean...literacy that is used intelligently to discern the difference between propaganda, or "fake news," and objective facts, and in that way arrive at conclusions based on facts. Since some people either can't or won't do that, it can be said their literacy is not "meaningful."

If it is, I agree with you. Indeed, that's what a lot of the "founding fathers" thought, which is why the Senate was elected by state legislatures, not directly elected.
It's complicated, but some lies are more skillfully disguised than others. They play on the baser instincts and prejudices, are beaten into the brain from every direction by constant repetition, until it becomes a conviction impervious to contradiction.

Maybe it's the TYPE of democracy, and a parliamentary system would improve the quality of the decision-making process.

If your point is that the liars are just too good at what they do, and therefore the masses cannot be trusted to know the difference, then what, as I already asked you, is the alternative, in your opinion?
I'm not disputing that people will convince themselves a lie, or "misinformation," is the truth if they have sufficient motivation (power, status, money). They may actually believe it for their own reasons (religion, ideology, personal bias). Because the 'convincers' are "experts" with impressive credentials, the 'convinced' become so because it's in their personal self-interest; they WANT to believe them. You don't have convince me of what to be is an obvious fact.
But what's your remedy? You apparently think "mass democracy" can't be fixed. Okay, fine, so what do you replace it with?

I just hope things hang together until I die, which is maximum 30 years. I haven't taken great care of myself, so my hard target is about how long we might have left.
The Club of Rome put out The Limits of Growth in 1971, and 50 years later we've done practically nothing to prevent a catastrophic meltdown around 2040.
Industrial output will nosedive as non-renewable resources begin to run out and food production drops precipitously as prices skyrocket, coinciding with a major population die-off, and pollution (climate change?) becomes another critical factor. contributing to a massive, worldwide crash.
It could happen.
On the other hand, major technological advances, and/or other developments, might yet ameliorate these dire predictions.
