Margaret Atwood (best known for The Handmaid's Tale) recognized problems within the USA in 2003. What she says still applies except the Constitution has been gutted even more.

I love Margaret Atwood. I drove to Tulsa wants to hear her talk about her new book, The Blind Assassin. I read The Handmaid's Tale many many years agobut for some reason I can't talk myself into watching it on Hulu. I think it's because I don't want to get hooked on a long running series.

I would love to hear what she thinks about America in 2021.

This is obviously dated (pre Trump) and our world standing severely bashed even further since then. But then I question her Disneyfied view of our past. Those words on the Statue of Liberty were certainly not in effect as we turned away boat loads of Jews fleeing the Nazis and Eastern European massacres in the 1930’s. Our treatment of Irish and Chinese immigrants was abominable for the most part. We were late to the party in abolishing slavery and it took a deadly civil war even then.
Every great civilization has at some point crumbled under its own weight. The Chinese were so far advanced at one time, as were the Greeks, the Romans, the Egyptians, the Inca, the Mayan and many others. All were brought down and virtually disappeared over time, setting back the progress of mankind by thousands of years. The dumb and fearful always seem to prevail at some point. We here have been advancing for close to 300 years. Our gene pool has obviously been mutating backwards for large portions of the country, who are well armed and well infiltrated into every branch of government and military. And the US is not alone! Much of Europe, east and west, is devolving into fascism. Or at least chaos, as the riots in many capitals over the renewed threats of lock downs have shown. Humans will always survive, but what our societies look like at the end of this century or maybe long before, may more closely resemble one of the many horror movies we’ve watched over the years.
