Quite a conundrum, how to honor a brave World War II vet even though he's a racist pig.
By his own admissions he does not seem to have been a "brave" veteran at all, certainly no hero, but rather a dangerous psychopath, who was used as a weapon by the army. Wind him up, give him a gun and point him at the enemy then hope one of them kills him after he finishes rampaging.
A man like this deserves no respect, at best perhaps a little begrudged pity.
I have disagreed for a long time with the notion that a veteran is a hero. Everybody makes a great contribution to this nation, a immigrant window cleaner hanging outside a skyscraper on a minimum wage is as brave.
I have escaped a society that made heroes of lousy people and lousy professions like lobbying. Being a freethinker to me is questioning everything.
This country has glorified wars as just and your duty and sent thousands of young people to die and hurt based on lies while we are brainwashed to celebrate them. We have long overstated soldiers' importance in the society.
If someone attacks our land or the society, it is quite a different story.
So happy to read your quote, St-Sinner, I thought I was the only one to hate the glorifying of soldiers and war.
I think he should be referred to the nearest VA Hospital for a full workup & probably some Prozac..... "rants" are not normal behavior.
Honor should be reserved for the honorable, IMO.
Well said
